I’ve been a fan of South Park (1997-Present) since I was little older than the characters in the show. Anyone who grew up on the series remembers 2003’s episode about Casa Bonita, a Mexican-themed mega-Chuck E. Cheese. Cartman will go to any length to make sure he gets to go see the cliff divers, eat sopapillas, and explore Black Bart’s cove. As a kid, it seemed unreal.

And yet, it is. Casa Bonita has been a fixture of the Denver area since 1974. I don’t know that I’d had any idea this wonderland among the Rockies existed until 2021, when I heard Matt Stone and Trey Parker were planning to acquire and reopen it. A Covid miracle! But those were foggy days for foggy minds. Of course, I forgot as soon as I’d heard.

That is until recently. ¡Casa Bonita Mi Amor! (2024), a documentary about the acquisition and reopening, follows what happened beyond the forgotten headlines. I decided to remember. And you know what? It’s funny; it’s sweet. I liked it.

Don’t expect much more than a well-made Netflix documentary (though this one isn’t actually from Netflix. The genre seems unavoidable these days). You’re not coming to Matt, Trey, or director Arthur Bradford for F for Fake (1973). What Casa Bonita has to offer is, rather, human interest of a specifically Gen X sort.

Some readers may know I co-host a podcast on culture at the end of history. Currently, we’re covering Gen-X media. We talk about all sorts of things—both negative and positive. What I saw in this documentary was the best of what we cover: above all, a “fuck it” attitude toward arbitrary authority and precedent.

Matt and Trey sank over $30 million dollars into a childhood dream. They designed characters and games, updated the food, gutted the interior, and preserved the exterior locals love. Whatever is selfish in their act pales in comparison to the joy it brought the people of their home state. And, well, the joy it brought me.
