Honor killings: not just for Muslims anymore

Last updated on: September 14, 2016 at 7:49 am   By Jane the Actuary

So some time ago, I read an article in The Atlantic, the main theme of which was that poor whites and poor blacks have more in common than they know.  I remember it too vaguely to find it now, but it seems to me that one of the key statements was, “in both cases, when there’s nothing left, pride and respect become all-important.”  And in the case of inner-city blacks, “respect” becomes murder, or shooting, anyway, when you’ve been disrespected,... Read more

Hillary’s health, again

Last updated on: September 12, 2016 at 8:37 am   By Jane the Actuary

First of all, some background and a few quick links to get readers up to speed as needed: Midmorning yesterday we first saw reports of an unusual incident at a 9/11 commemoration in New York.  The first tweets were merely that Hillary Clinton left unexpectedly, and an eyewitness said there appeared to be a health scare.  Then two videos surfaced, here in an article at The Federalist.  She is leaning on a pillar, then needs to be helped/carried into the waiting... Read more

A few September 11th words

Last updated on: September 11, 2016 at 10:06 am   By Jane the Actuary

I’d been thinking about the fact that blogging has been light lately.  Partly it’s a matter of lack of time, with more effort on other activities, and partly it’s a matter of just being so frickin’ discouraged with the craziness of our election right now.  Neither Clinton nor Trump are fit to be president, and hopes that we’d receive some unexpected good news that there was a true alternative are moving from highly improbable to the “in what fantasy world... Read more

Church outreach – reader ideas?

Last updated on: September 10, 2016 at 5:37 pm   By Jane the Actuary

So it’s been a long week, and I’ve been somewhat preoccupied by Cub Scout matters, especially getting started for the new year and trying to recruit new boys when the younger grades at school are now extremely small, so that we need a substantial portion of the kids to participate in order to manage, rather than being able to limp along with a small fraction of each class.  Thursday we had a leader meeting and Friday we — my husband... Read more

What about Earpiecegate?

Last updated on: September 8, 2016 at 9:35 pm   By Jane the Actuary

The trouble with conspiracies is they draw you in. Drudge this morning linked to Infowars this morning with a suspicious image from last night’s “presidential forum,” which is also available and discussed at reddit.com. The claim:  that the image clearly shows Clinton wearing an earpiece. The rebuttal:  that’s clearly just a trick of the eyes, and all you really see is the lighting and an oddly-shiny inner ear.  (Snopes has some other angles which look earpiece-less.) A site called TruePundit... Read more

A day at Greenfield Village

Last updated on: September 7, 2016 at 8:18 am   By Jane the Actuary

The Wright brothers’ bicycle shop. The back workshop. Henry Ford’s boyhood home. And workshop. Thomas Edison’s Menlo Park laboratory. And Machine Shop. Yes, this is Greenfield Village. Because, while Detroit is not a tourism destination, this complex — the Greenfield Village living history museum and the Henry Ford Museum, a massive collection of historic vehicles (cars, trains, planes) and other objects — is a big deal. This isn’t just your usual construction or transplantation of historic buildings, demonstrating pioneer or... Read more

Update from Madiganistan

Last updated on: September 5, 2016 at 9:33 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Ah, the train wreck that is Illinois politics. Here’s a piece of local news that’s old by now, but still important to share:  the Illinois Supreme Court, in a decision on August 25, decreed that the Independent Maps Amendment, a proposed amendment to the Illinois constitution that was to have been placed on the November ballot after a lengthy petition drive and 500,000 signatures, failed to pass muster constitutionally.  The proposed amendment would have provided for a nonpartisan process for... Read more

What’s the purpose of immigration?

Last updated on: September 2, 2016 at 8:39 am   By Jane the Actuary

that is, in the year 2016, why do we allow strangers into our country? Is it in order to enrich our country and its citizens? Or is it as a form of charity, a work of mercy, “welcoming the stranger” and providing a sort of foreign aid right here in our own country? I write this after having just read an article in the Tribune today, “No more nation of immigrants: Trump plan calls for a major, long-lasting cut in... Read more

To fix Chicago’s murder rate, we need more famous people

Last updated on: August 31, 2016 at 3:13 pm   By Jane the Actuary

No, I don’t mean that we need more celebrities to come to Chicago and, well, do whatever it is that celebrities do:  sing, act, you-tube, etc., or even attend anti-crime rallies. I mean this:  in the recent article in the Chicago Tribune on the quick arrest of two men for the murder of the cousin of basketball star Dwayne Wade, these are the paragraphs that caught my eye: When asked about the difference in solving Aldridge’s killing within days compared... Read more

A Cub Scout ethics question

Last updated on: August 31, 2016 at 10:22 am   By Jane the Actuary

Or, “oh, cr**!” So I’m the new committee chair for Cub Scouts.  The leaders will meet on Thursday.  In the meantime, I’ve read through the requirements, and it turns out that the pack has seemingly been giving out rank advancement without regard to whether the rank requirements have been met or not.  Not only has the pack not been tracking advancement, but the ranks require such things as “attend a pack campout” (which hasn’t happened for a good five years)... Read more
