Making Science into a god
Last updated on: March 13, 2017 at 9:05 am By Jane the Actuary
When you expect that scientists have the answers to moral questions. When you believe that science, after the beginning of the modern era within a discipline at least, has always been always correct and its processes are fool-proof because they have been arrived at with The Scientific Method. When you believe that science has unlimited ability to invent or explain. Then you, too, might have made science into a god. History, and the present day is full of examples of scientists... Shortchanging Peoria – again
Last updated on: March 12, 2017 at 4:19 pm By Jane the Actuary
Back in February I wrote about Caterpillar’s decision to move its headquarters from Peoria to the Chicago area, taking along 300 executives and support staff. While it wouldn’t affect the largest part of the jobs there, at least for the time being, it is certainly a sign of the times, as the wealthy and upper middle class are less willing to live in small towns and more likely to demand the lifestyle of a large urban area, or the wealthy... “Climate Change is Real” (guest post)
Last updated on: March 12, 2017 at 10:13 am By Jane the Actuary
Hey, everyone — I said in my prior post that I’d been having real-world conversation. Here’s a piece from a real-world friend who assures me he is not some sort of crazy eco-warrior. Please give me — and him — your feedback in the comments. First, thank you, Jane, for allowing me to use your blog and to share my views on Climate Change with you and your readers. Jane’s perspective (shared here) is, unfortunately, not uncommon. In fact, I... Read more

How much does childbirth cost?
Last updated on: March 11, 2017 at 6:33 pm By Jane the Actuary
Just a quick link here: NPR published an article, “I’m Pregnant. What Would Happen If I Couldn’t Afford Health Care?” that claimed that All told, my prenatal care with all visits and tests included would be over $10,000. This is not counting labor and delivery, which in my area is estimated to be up to $30,000 for a vaginal birth and $50,000 for a cesarean section. Is this legit? My understanding had always been that childbirth costs ran about $10,000... Read more

5 reasons I’m suspicious of climate change crusaders
Last updated on: March 12, 2017 at 11:16 am By Jane the Actuary
So I’ve had some (gasp!) off-blog conversations about the whole issue of climate change/global warming. I’ll be honest: this is not something I really deal with much. I generally tend to think that there are better than even odds that the planet is warming, but at the same time, I don’t think that Science is a god that demands our worship, and that those who carry the name Scientist must be treated as infallibly making the right decisions about human actions.... Is Iceland “the first country to require equal pay for women”?
Last updated on: March 10, 2017 at 10:48 am By Jane the Actuary
So says the headline of this NPR article, “Iceland Plans To Become World’s First Country To Require Equal Pay For Women,” which reports that “Gender equality benefits all of us,” Iceland’s Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said on International Women’s Day, as his government works on a law to require companies to show they pay men and women the same salary for the same work. . . . The law, which is believed to be the first of its kind at... Read more

Who writes Holocaust memoirs?
Last updated on: March 9, 2017 at 11:47 am By Jane the Actuary
How many Holocaust survivor narratives have you read? I can think of: Night Clara’s War Hidden in Plain Sight A Promise at Sobibor The Girl in the Green Sweater The last of these I’m reading right now, and I’m sure I’ve read more in the past that I just can’t call to mind. But here’s what occurred to me: Holocaust memoirs seem to be written predominantly by individuals who were teens, or children, at the time. Why? Possibility 1: it’s... Read more

This is more a matter of aiming at opening up a discussion than anything else right now, but, what if Ryancare were fixed? I’ve already shared my opinion on the House plan, and I know that some readers think that there’s really no reason to do anything other than keep the ACA in place as-is, but the plan does have some potential. What if the credits were based on a metric of standardized cost for a representative high-deductible plan, with an... Read more

About that “strike” . . .
Last updated on: March 8, 2017 at 12:32 pm By Jane the Actuary
So there’s a strike today. Did’ja notice? Yeah, me neither. Seriously, though, this is not a “women’s strike.” Here’s what women are being urged to “strike from”: Paid jobs Emotional Labor Childcare Diapers Housework Cooking Sweeping Laundry Dishes Errands Groceries Fake smiles Flirting Makeup Laundry Shaving Which is a peculiar view of women’s place in the world. It places them as adversaries against men, and, in particular, as adversaries against their husbands/the fathers of their children. What does it mean... Read more

The good, the bad, and the ugly: Ryancare edition

Stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid. That’s my overall reaction to the GOP’s new healthcare bill. You can read the text here, and the GOP’s spin on it here. Lots of sources for summaries of the bill; you can start with Politico. So far I’ve read the text itself (which admittedly means missing a lot because so many of the changes are done by means of amending other laws in that crazy way that legislation works) and a bit of commentary and...
