A few words on Dutch moms

Last updated on: November 11, 2015 at 12:25 pm   By Jane the Actuary

who have been proclaimed, according to the Washington Post, the “world’s most relaxed moms,” at least by means of a rhetorical question in the article headline which precedes a piece, published last week, by an American expat, describing her experience. Living in one of the most densely populated countries in Europe it’s pretty hard to ignore your neighbors, not to mention the famed Dutch aversion to curtains. Despite the lack of privacy there is very little sense of keeping up... Read more

Ray North

Last updated on: November 10, 2015 at 9:59 am   By Jane the Actuary

Have you ever googled a friend, not out of ill-intent but just curiosity, because they’d done so many things prior to your knowing that person that you wondered if any of it showed up online? If you google my friend Ray North, you get the website for, and all manner of information about, Ray, North Dakota.  Here’s what the town has to say about itself: Ray is a positive thinking community with an eye on the future. A small town it... Read more

About that “generous atheist kids” study

Last updated on: October 13, 2016 at 7:52 am   By Jane the Actuary

It’s garbage. Really. Here’s the link to the study itself, as linked to by Slate.com, The Guardian, and pretty much everyone else that wants confirmation that religious people are morally inferior. The study itself goes like this:  in individual sessions, researchers gave children, ages 5 – 12, the opportunity to select 10 stickers out of a set of 30.  The kids were told that 10 were theirs to keep, but they could choose to give away some to another child... Read more

The “purpose of schools” and the “summer slump”

Last updated on: November 9, 2015 at 11:34 am   By Jane the Actuary

You’ve surely heard this before:  we need to adopt year-round schools to end the “summer slump” — that is, the fact that students forget so much of what was learned during the school year, over summer break, requiring that a sizeable portion of the next year’s instruction is simply a repeat of the prior year’s material. Here’s a quote from a long piece at the Washington Post, “A venture capitalist searches for the purpose of school. Here’s what he found.”... Read more

“The widow’s mite” and “birds in the air” in 2015

Last updated on: November 8, 2015 at 6:52 pm   By Jane the Actuary

For those of you at a Catholic or reasonably liturgical Protestant church today, you heard the reading of the widow’s mite, as well as, most likely, a homily/sermon on sacrificial giving. Elsewhere in the readings cycle, we’ll all hear  Matthew 6:25 – 34, and the injunction not to worry about tomorrow but rather to “Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.” So, for... Read more

Recipe-blogging: two new-to-me simple “stir-fries” and a secret ingredient

Last updated on: March 5, 2016 at 10:22 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Looks nasty, doesn’t it?  But it tastes better than it looks. This is “peanut chicken stir-fry” as it’s titled in the cookbook, though what I describe below is simplified and adjusted for the plain tastes of the family. The basics: 1 pound chicken breasts or thighs, cubed/cut-up 1 16-oz bag of frozen broccoli Sauce: 1/4 cup peanut butter 1/2 cup water 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (or 2-3 garlic cloves, in which case, fry... Read more

. . . it depends on what the meaning of “atheist” is

Last updated on: November 7, 2015 at 12:47 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Atheists who believe in God. . . people who don’t believe in God who don’t call themselves “atheist”:  what’s up with that? Atheism seems to have an image problem. How many times have we heard laments that women who believe in equal rights don’t call themselves “feminists” — because they think of feminists as rabidly anti-male?  (Never mind that these same lamenters then claim that you’re not a proper feminist unless you believe in abortion, free daycare, etc., so you... Read more

“In health and in health” – a Dear Prudence letter

Last updated on: November 6, 2015 at 1:09 pm   By Jane the Actuary

The following is from Slate’s advice column, Dear Prudence — and, to be honest, some of her letters are so far-fetched that I wonder how often they’re purely invented by the letter-writers, but here goes: Dear Prudence,  Four years ago, my sweet and loving husband, the awesome father of our three children, was struck down by brain cancer and suffered brain trauma following emergency surgery. I’ve cared for him at home, dealing with the hassles of hospitals, insurance, family drama... Read more

Robin Williams, Lewy Body Dementia, and the acceptability of suicide

Last updated on: November 6, 2015 at 12:46 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Likely you’ve read one of the recent news reports that Robin Williams, at the end of his life, was experiencing the symptoms of Lewy Body dementia, a form of dementia which, unlike Alzheimer’s, is not characterized by memory troubles but by a host of other issues, including Parkinson-like stiffness, problems with mental sharpness, and, most unsettling for those afflicted, hallucinations.  Because the symptoms tend to suggest other ailments, diagnosis is difficult, and, in Williams’ case, did not occur until the... Read more
