From the library: Under the Bus; How working women are being run over, by Caroline Fredrickson

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:11 pm   By Jane the Actuary

So remember when I wrote about Unfinished Business, by Ann-Marie Slaughter, and her notion that the way for women/mothers to move forward is by “valuing care” more?  I agreed with some of what she had to say, the moral suasion part in which employers are prodded to accept men and women interested in spending time with their families, but her bottom line seemed to be that for “us” to “value care” involved serious boosts in government outlays to fund child... Read more

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Last updated on: January 26, 2016 at 10:28 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Per the UN, and also observed by the EU, and many European countries, it commemorates the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Russian army, on January 27, 1945. Is this the right date to have chosen? The U.S. chose April 28 – 29th, the dates on which the U.S. army liberated Dachau.  (Why did this take two days?  Wikipedia doesn’t say here, but in the main Dachau article, this is described as a two-day process, with the surrender... Read more

Pinewood Derby 2016: “Jimmy”

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:12 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Finally, three kids in, we’re getting the hang of the Pinewood Derby.  This is “Jimmy,” named after Jimmy Johns, because the car was inspired by a meal there.  I’m not sure how the plan was worked out, exactly, but father and son came home with the idea in mind to slide the wood block in half, sand down to a sandwich shape, and add in play food that hasn’t been played with since preschool.  Then they happily went out... Read more

The NEETs are not so neat: new statistics on black youth in Chicago (updated)

Last updated on: January 26, 2016 at 1:13 pm   By Jane the Actuary

From today’s Chicago Tribune, “Nearly half of young black men in Chicago out of work, out of school: report“: Forty-seven percent of 20- to 24-year-old black men in Chicago, and 44 percent in Illinois, were out of school and out of work in 2014, compared with 20 percent of Hispanic men and 10 percent of white men in the same age group, according to the report from the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Great Cities Institute. A few thoughts on “pro-choice-ism”, and two analogies

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:13 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Let’s start with this: The pro-abortion attitudes I cited back on Friday, and the demands that abortion be treated as a routine medical treatment, seem to be increasingly prevalent.  It’s highly disturbing to read these sorts of statements, the ones that say “I had an abortion because it’s my right to have sex without ever experiencing a pregnancy, and I don’t believe I or anyone else needs any reason other than simply wanting to.”  And these voices so drown out others... Read more

“Papers, please”? A few words on state gun background check laws

Last updated on: January 23, 2016 at 4:27 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Earlier this month, President Obama announced executive actions on guns, and conservatives both decried his actions as unconstitutional, or at least an abuse of executive power, and at the same time unlikely to be effective in their goals.  “Enforce the laws already on the books!” critics cried, and, indeed, very few of the crimes committed under existing law are prosecuted, blamed on lack of resources and the difficulty of proving the crimes — though the NRA and other opponents of new gun... Read more

“It took me four days to hitchhike from Saginaw”

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:14 pm   By Jane the Actuary

Ann Althouse talks about the new Bernie Sanders ad, in which he uses a montage of farmers and “everyday-life” images as well as bits of campaign rallies, set to the music of Simon and Garfunkel’s “America,” with it’s refrain of “they’ve all come to look for America,” then, in a follow-up post, dissects the song’s lyrics, which are not as sunny and optimistic as, say, “God Bless the USA,” but rather express a longing: There’s this deep feeling we have... Read more

What do 113 female lawyers tell us about abortion and “abortion alternatives”?

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:15 pm   By Jane the Actuary

I’d been meaning to write about this for a while. Two weeks ago, Slate.com published an article, “‘I Am an Attorney Because I Had an Abortion’:  A powerful amicus brief to the Supreme Court is signed by 113 attorneys who shared their abortion stories.” about a group of 113 female* lawyers who submitted an Amicus brief for consideration in the latest Supreme Court case on abortion.  They later did a follow-up article interviewing one of the lawyers. * yes, I... Read more

“Collective fear” in Germany? Keeping blinders firmly affixed!

Last updated on: January 21, 2016 at 9:31 am   By Jane the Actuary

The Silversternacht attacks. Groping in swimming pools and at a “welcome party”. Now an account in Die Welt, a respectable (non-tabloid) German paper, by an utterly disillusioned worker in a refugee shelter in Germany.  Here’s a translation into English (yes, this is Pamela Geller’s site, but the translation is legit if a bit clumsy).  She reports (a few sentences out of a much longer piece): They come to me and demand that I immediately give them an apartment and a fancy... Read more

The DPS sickout: teachers digging their own grave?

Last updated on: March 26, 2016 at 4:16 pm   By Jane the Actuary

The teachers of the Detroit Public Schools staged a “sickout” today.  You know, the sort of protest where they all called in sick, even though they weren’t, and used the day to protest against the DPS administration.  According to the Detroit News, In a statement Wednesday afternoon, a DPS spokeswoman said 88 of the district’s 97 schools were closed due to the high volume of teacher absences, the latest in a series of sickouts in the state’s largest district. Wednesday... Read more
