Tribalism is Here to Stay
Last updated on: November 19, 2020 at 2:58 am By Brad Vaughn
Improving people’s economic status does not undermine tribalism. In fact, our goal is not to eradicate “tribes” (i.e., groups of belonging). We do well to have proper expectations and keep in mind what actually is the problem and what is not. Read more

Honor, Shame, and the Gospel (New Book!)
Last updated on: August 27, 2021 at 7:54 pm By Brad Vaughn
In 2016, the first Honor and Shame Conference was held in Wheaton. It brought together leading voices in the theology and missions world to deepen the honor-shame conversation. Some of those voices have now joined together as contributors to a new book! It’s called Honor, Shame, and the Gospel: Reframing Our Message and Ministry, edited by Christopher Flanders and Werner Mischke. Here is a list of the contributors: Steven C. Hawthorne Jayson Georges Tom Steffen Jackson Wu Randolph Richards Mako... Read more

Does the Bible really address policing and black identity?
Last updated on: September 30, 2020 at 12:39 am By Brad Vaughn
Looking at the table of contents, I scratched my head trying to imagine how McCaulley would use Scripture to address topics such as policing, black identity, and black rage. I could only hope his methodology would be more exegetically rigorous than many authors of black liberation theology. He did not disappoint. I was humbled and in awe of the ways that McCaulley analyzed several texts. Read more

Reading While Black as an Exercise in Contextualization
Last updated on: October 2, 2020 at 2:29 am By Brad Vaughn
Prior to the release of Esau McCaulley’s Reading While Black, I had mixed feelings about reading the book, which had received a lot of press leading up to its publication. I'm so glad I came to my senses. in this post, I explore how Reading While Black can be seen as an exercise in contextualization. Read more

Entire Issue of Mission Dei Journal focuses on Honor and Shame
Last updated on: October 19, 2020 at 11:07 pm By Brad Vaughn
The recent Missio Dei Journal has dedicated an entire issue to the issue of honor and shame! It's loaded with great content. I was honored to be asked to contribute an article myself. It was probably the most challenging article I've ever written because the topic is so broad and important yet nothing had been written on it specifically. Read more

Is Church Planting a Biblical Mandate?
Last updated on: October 29, 2020 at 1:04 am By Brad Vaughn
I challenged the presenters, “Where in the Bible are we commanded to plant churches?” The simple and obvious response was, “it is not commanded.” But if Paul didn’t church plant, then he must have made disciples. Making disciples is the mandate while church planting is a result. Read more

Misreading Scripture with Individualist Eyes
Last updated on: October 19, 2020 at 11:07 pm By Brad Vaughn
One of the book's authors, Randy Richards, has written another one and it's fantastic. I'm actually one of the endorsers. For that reason, I can't write a formal review of the book in an academic journal, but I can let you know about it here! Read more

Approaching Wokeness with Generosity
Last updated on: October 21, 2020 at 11:45 pm By Brad Vaughn
Is it true that colorblindness is not the goal of these writers? Depends. They do not reject colorblindness as if they want their children to be judged by their skin color. Quite the opposite. Read more

Strachan's comments come from his sincere ambition to help the church be free from enslaving ideologies that run counter to Scripture. However, as others have also expressed, his words do a disservice to the church. They in fact are counterproductive to the good, fruitful goals that I believe he seeks. Read more
