What you can learn from #honortheology 2020-01-29T05:15:23-07:00 Brad Vaughn

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

A few years back, I began a series on Twitter using the hashtag #honortheology. It attempted to explain various doctrines using honor-shame language in a concise Twitter-friendly way. Since then, many people have added comments and articles to the hashtag.

This post reviews some of those tweets and invites you to propose some of your own. If you are on Twitter, check it out. You can also find me at @jacksonwu4china.

Learning from #honortheology

Monotheism-The 1Creator-King deserves all honor, revealed Himself via Israel, will be glorified by all nations #honortheology

Salvation-restoring relationship and honor/face with God & the human family so that the world is full of God’s glory #honortheology

“The Law”-a divine covenant of mutual identification & loyalty creating a collective identity where honor-shame are shared #honortheology

Justification-declaration that any who boast in Christ will not be put to shame but be included in God’s people cf Rom 2-5 #honortheology

Concerning faith

John5:44, How can you believe when you receive glory from one another and do not seek the glory that comes from the only God? #honortheology

Concerning Sin

Rom 2:23, “You who boast in the law DISHONOR God by breaking the law.” #honortheology

Concerning God’s purposes

Is 48:11 “For my own sake, for my own sake, I do it, for how should my name be profaned? My glory I will not give to another” #honortheology

Christ’s resurrection

[God] “raised him from the dead and gave him GLORY, so that your faith and hope are in God.” 1 Pet 1:21 #honortheology

Anthropology

what is man… you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings & crowned him with GLORY & HONOR. Ps 8:4–5 #honortheology

Divine judgment (saving & punitive)

“Indeed, none who wait for you shall be put to shame; they shall be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous” (Ps 25:3) #honortheology

“O Lord, the hope of Israel, all who forsake you shall be put to SHAME” Jer17.13 #honortheology

“I will save the lame & gather the outcast, & I will change their shame into praise & renown in all the earth” Zeph 3.19 #honortheology

Good news for honor-shame cultures: “I will give them an everlasting name, that shall not be cut off” (Isa 56:5) #honortheology

“Shame is on all faces…For [silver and gold] was the stumbling block of their iniquity” (Ezek 7:18–19) #honortheology

Lam 3:30 (cf. Mt 5:39) “Let him offer his cheek to one who would strike him, & let him be filled with disgrace” #honortheology

Sober reminder 4 those seeking life through fame: “Their graves are their homes forever, their dwelling places to all generations, though they called lands by their own NAMES. Man in his POMP will not remain; he is like the beasts that perish” Ps 49:11-12 #honortheology

Wisdom

“The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace.” #honortheology

“He who commits adultery…will get wounds and dishonor, and his disgrace will not be wiped away” (Prov 6:32-33) #honortheology

“It is an HONOR for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling.” (Prov 20:3) #honortheology

“A good NAME is to be chosen rather than great riches” (Prov 22:1) #honortheology

“Be not afraid when a man becomes rich…For when he dies…his GLORY will not go down after him” Ps 49:17-18 #honortheology

Concerning Worship

You have said, “Seek my face.” My heart says to you, “Your face, LORD, do I seek.” Prov 27:8 #honortheology

all the peoples walk each in the NAME of its god, but we will walk in the NAME of the LORD our God forever and ever (Mic 4:5) #honortheology

“Who is this King of GLORY? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of GLORY!” Ps24.10 #honortheology

“The nations shall see your righteousness, and all the kings your GLORY” Isa 62.2 #honortheology

Life changing truth: The “one deeply despised, abhorred by the nation” is “honored in the eyes of the LORD” (Is 49:5,7) #honortheology
