From time to time other people will disappoint you, with results that can range from mere inconveniences to real tragedies. Forgiveness is a way to move past those disappointments. Forgiveness can liberate enormous amounts of energy that would otherwise be wasted on negativity. Keep in mind that everyone can grow and change, and forgiveness is a great way to get that process started or to positively acknowledge that it has already begun. Forgiveness is an affirmation of the fact that there is no value to be gained from being a victim, and as such it helps you to focus on your positive possibilities rather than on your past disappointments. Forgiveness enables you to establish trust and to express your positive expectations. You make mistakes. Other people in your life make mistakes. Forgiveness is a proactive way to heal and to move everyone forward.

There is a cleansing and refreshing freedom which comes from forgiveness. When you’ve been hurt, does it make sense to perpetuate the hurt? No, of course not. No one would want to do that. And yet we are often so reluctant to forgive.

Forgiving someone does not mean you must trust them or allow them into a position where they can hurt you again. Forgiveness means simply moving on. Forgiveness does not have to make you any less vigilant or any more vulnerable. Forgiveness does not mean that what happened was acceptable. It means that you’ve chosen to no longer let it hold you back.

With forgiveness, you are no longer a victim. With forgiveness, you take control of your own destiny. Forgiveness means that you are bigger than what happened, and confident enough to move on past it. Forgive, and stop poisoning your own life with the past transgressions of others. Forgive, and feel the strength of your own integrity. Forgive, and be free.
