Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
Whatever you seek is already yours, when you’re willing to go deeply enough into it. What does that mean? Here’s an exercise you can do to find out.
Think of something you’d like to have in your life, and then ask yourself what you would do with it if you had it. When you have an answer, ask yourself what you would do with that. Keep going, and you’ll eventually reach a point where whatever it is you would do is something you can do right now.
For example, let’s say you’d like to increase your income by $1,000 a month. Now, imagine you have successfully done that. Ask yourself — what would you then do with that additional $1000 each month? Suppose your answer is that you would use it to buy a small house in the forest. So then ask yourself what you would do if you had a house in the forest. Perhaps you’d take a walk and watch the sun set. The thing is, that’s something you can do right now, without the increase in monthly income and without the house in the forest.
That’s a relatively simple example. With many things it will take several more levels of questioning before you arrive at something you can do right now. However, no matter what the original desire may be, there is always something behind that desire that you can do right now.
Why is that? It’s because what you truly desire is not to acquire some possession or arrange some specific situation. Those things are merely means to an end. Whatever you desire, you desire because of how it will feel. Once you zero in on the feeling you wish to feel, you can also find a way to feel that same feeling right now, or at any time. And by so doing, not only can you immediately experience the fulfillment you seek, your feeling empowers you to achieve all those intermediate steps if you so wish.
Truly, you can feel inside you the fulfillment of your most ambitious desires long before you achieve the outside conditions associated with that fulfillment. Right now, in some way, you can feel the essence of your dream. The more you feel it, the more fully that dream comes to life.
