- What If God and I Had a Band?
What If God and I Had a Band?

Best cup of coffee
What if God….
What if the Lord and I had a band? Seriously. What does that look like? No, I haven’t been swiggin’ malt liquor with my coffee—not yet anyway.
I don’t know about you, but I get woken up about the same time in the middle of the night, about 1:32am—about. I get up and use the bathroom then come back to bed and I am awake enough to navigate that passage and sometimes, when I get back to bed, my brain starts running “The List.” You know the one. All the things you need to do that day, the things you didn’t do the day before. What about this? What about that? Does the dog have water?
Satan found his way….
Satan found his way into my brain pan and is going to screw the rest of the night’s sleep ability. I laid there and maybe fell back to sleep for a few minutes, eventually deciding there are a couple of things I could get up and do before the Arizona summer heat melts my face, so I did.
It meant I was going to drive to a couple of places, so I walked the dog and made sure she had WATER and set out with a good cup of coffee. One of those cups with sweetness, cream, and whatever that crushed mushroom powder is that is supposed to improve your entire life.
As I’m driving, I realized the music playing was from my phone’s play list, rather than a radio station or Pandora. Then I realized the selection which had been playing was a pretty good selection I hadn’t heard for a while https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%20104&version=NIV. What if this was the Lord’s play list and He’s with me in the truck now and this is what He wanted to listen to?
… in my truck….
I smiled. I am in my truck, driving, with a good cup of coffee, a beautiful cloudy pre-dawn day (days like this are worshipped in Phoenix), and there was Loggins and Messina Nobody But You. When was the last time you heard that song?
I started to wonder what our band would look like. What instrument would the Lord play? Frankly, He could play all of them all at once. He’s that good. He doesn’t need arms and legs and stuff like that. That’s just for us to use to get us through the fruit and vegetable section at the grocery store. But let’s say He has this life form we recognize. Like a grey-haired, bearded older man with kind eyes. His hands are well worn and creased, but somehow, His nails are trimmed.
I think He would be the drummer.
He wanted me to hear….
So, I am driving down the street, comfortable, relaxed, sipping an incredible cup of coffee, and listening to Nobody But You. I turn up the volume. That finished and rolled into Drop Kick Murphy’s I’m Shipping Off to Boston. It wasn’t until the next one, Brother’s Osborn’s Nobody’s Nobody that I finally realized I was listening to Dad’s playlist. He wanted me to hear some of his choices this morning. There was also Eric Church and Lee Brice.
I kept seeing Dad, this grey haired with a grey beard, man playing the drums and smiling at me and figured out I could play the wood clacker thingy’s on a Talking Head’s song. I ‘hip danced’ in my imagination like they did on Saturday Night Live one time in a skit. Shaboozey’s A Bar Song was in there somewhere. When the lyrics mentioned Jack Daniels, I looked over and Jack was singing his own name and playing the base guitar. There was virtually no pause between Shaboozey and Credence Clearwater Revival, CCR’s, Fortunate Son. A classic. We ended the run with the Doobie Brothers and finally, Smash Mouth’s I’m a Believer. Yes, Shrek was in there.
Dad didn’t care about the lyrics.
I found myself driving down the street trying to drum, drive, and drink my coffee at the same time. Don’t judge me. Dad didn’t care about the lyrics. We never have to be holy. The Lord knows the life living inside me. Dad knows the lyrics are just lyrics and what they meant at the time they were written, would someday mean something completely different when a guy, with a good cup of coffee years later was understanding the God of the Universe was wanting to play His play list because it would just be the two of us experiencing time together, in a truck cab, in the early morning. He met me where I needed Him to meet me.
He does that all the time. Meeting me where I need Him too. He loves it. I have never stopped being amazed about time when I can actually experience the Unseen Hand move while I am watching it move! Most of the time, it is just a reminder I am not alone. And the One who is with me is the biggest Dad on the block.
Standby….
What is your playlist? Standby for some of the best drumming and air guitar you have ever played.
