- Sometimes, in our seasons….
Sometimes, in our seasons….

Sometimes, in our seasons…. 2022-05-29T14:16:19-07:00 Mark Williams
Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

SOMETIMES, IN OUR SEASONS….
Sometimes, in our seasons, we have difficulty seeing the season itself and get swallowed up in its trauma which is always swimming around and through it. If it was always a sunny beach, we would wish it would never end, but that isn’t reality and even a nice day on the beach, or a wonderous camp site next to a waterfall, has the proverbial chigger. Especially when, like these last couple of weeks, we see such anger and violence and cannot make any sense out it.
So, what do we do, eat more kale? Take a Zumba class? Read a book on the issue? Pray? Drink our consciousness off the planet?
Maybe. Maybe all of it.
Seems like that’s what we’ve been doing. Has it worked? Sometimes, it’s almost as if we tuck our heads under our arm and hide-it might just go away. We close our eyes to the world because it is a movie we do not want to watch.
Maybe-
Maybe, for a time. Then, one day, you wake and nothing has changed and now you have a headache from doing gin shooters with your cheerios.
Sometimes, hard things are good. Sometimes, miserably hard things, are some of the best of times as Dickens said. Sometimes, the storms are there to renew and re-energize a sleepy heart. Sometimes, the worst we experience, gives us a view of the best we have. All the fluff and masks fall away because they eventually have to. You can’t keep peddling the bike to keep up with the Jones’ because they will simply get a better bike. Along with those routine things in our lives, we add to it events like those we have seen these last two weeks. Things which can not have any good come out of them. How could they?
“Be still and know….”
“Be still and know….” the writer inked a couple of thousand years ago. When we have this trouble of seeing the season, we need to stop and listen-at least I do. What I know is probably wrong. We are humans after all and we bank on things that, on our best day, are borderline bad, like spanx and prostate exams. They help, but come on!
We just need to be patient
So, all that to say sometimes, we just need to be patient. Our God teaches us that. He is helping with that. We might find a heartful lift in a child’s nerf ball toy and we buy it for us-an adult. We might find it in a slice of chocolate cake, or an hour before dawn when the horizon starts to warm. We might find it in a laugh, or a refund check, or the eyes of a dog-any dog. Simple things for complex times.
Chiggers won’t leave
Life will be full of chiggers next to beautiful waterfalls and the best we have is a pair of spanx, a roll of duct tape, and the memory of the week’s prior prostate check. That’s what we got. There is a role God plays in our lives. But he waits on us. Us, to come to Him. Its not like we have to journey across country. We actually only need to turn to our right or to our left. He is right there-waiting for us as our Father. Dads do that-wait.
So, what will it hurt if, for just a moment, we take in a breath, close our eyes-
-and be still?
