Which Bible Should I Read? Selecting a Good Bible Version

Last updated on: October 8, 2025 at 9:38 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

Which Bible should you read? What is the key to selecting a good Bible version? If you are new at Bible reading, you might be wondering such questions. As a Bible translator, here are my suggestions. Selecting a Good Bible Version If this is the first time you will be making a concentrated effort to read the Bible, perhaps the best translation would be one that is considered a dynamic equivalence version. Such versions include: Common English Bible (CEB) Today’s... Read more

Reading James, 1 Peter, and Hebrews Missiologically

Last updated on: September 24, 2025 at 1:21 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

We focus our attention this week on reading James, 1 Peter, and Hebrews missiologically with our guest, Professor Abeneazer G. Urga. He is an adjunct faculty member with Columbia International University, and he teaches also at the Evangelical Theological College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Professor Urga is a co-editor of the monograph, Reading Hebrews and 1 Peter from Majority World Perspectives (Library of New Testament Studies 700, T.&T. Clark, 2024). He is also listed as the primary editor of the... Read more

Caesar and Christ Jesus: 10 Comparisons

Last updated on: October 1, 2025 at 10:59 am   By B. J. Oropeza

Jesus and Caesar—there are a number of striking similarities between these historical figures, and some differences. We will cover 10 of them. The Priene calendar inscription sparked on a renewal of Caesar studies in relation to the Christian gospel when it was first discovered in Anatolia (1899). In this inscription, Caesar Augustus’s birthday is considered good news in a sacred context: “The birthday of the emperor god opened up for the world a series of good tidings in his favor”... Read more

What does the Gospel Look Like for Ancient Non-Christians?

Last updated on: September 7, 2025 at 9:38 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

What did the gospel look like for non-Christians in the ancient world? Prior to Jesus and Paul, the “gospel” in the sense of (good) news  (εὐαγγέλιον/euangelion) appears in Greek and Roman classical literature. What passes for good news is different than what we find in the New Testament. Ancient Examples of the Good News for Pagans Classical Greek lexicons understand euangelion as a reward or recompense for good news. In Homer’s Odyssey, for instance, the hero Odysseus, disguised as an... Read more

How to Interpret Paul according to His Top 3 Motivations

Last updated on: August 31, 2025 at 5:31 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

How should we interpret Paul’s letters? One good way to read him is in accordance with his main motivations. In other words, which particular informants drive him to do what he does and say what he says as an apostle? There are at least 3 major motivations that are at the heart of our apostle’s calling. The first is his revelational experiences, the second is his reading of Scripture, and the third is his knowledge of Jesus traditions. When reading... Read more

The Gospel of Paul Revisited: 8 Points

Last updated on: August 12, 2025 at 7:32 am   By B. J. Oropeza

What are some of my findings regarding the gospel according to Paul? As I wrap up a book project that has taken up the majority of my writing time since my Sabbatical last year, here are 8 things I would like to share about what I discovered from my research: Origin of the Gospel The origin of Paul’s use of the word “gospel” (euangelion) appears to be adopted from the earliest apostles in Jerusalem, who adopted it from Jesus. Namely,... Read more

One of the Scariest Texts in the Bible: Matthew 7:21–23

Last updated on: July 29, 2025 at 11:57 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

One of the scariest passages in the Bible is Matthew 7:21–23. It is spoken by Jesus: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” The text speaks about judgement day in which “many” will say on that day to Jesus “Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty... Read more

Did Jesus or John say the famous words in John 3:16?

Last updated on: July 16, 2025 at 10:28 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

Perhaps the most famous words in the New Testament are in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (NKJV).* But who said these famous words—Jesus or John? In red letter editions of the Bible, such as we find in the NKJV and ESV, black letters are supposed to indicate the author’s words. In John’s Gospel, John is claimed to be... Read more

Which Letters of Paul did Paul Really Write?

Last updated on: June 30, 2025 at 4:41 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

The New Testament contains 13 letters attributed to the Apostle Paul, but which of these letters did he really write? Certain church fathers also thought that Paul wrote Hebrews, but this is unlikely. His name appears nowhere in this sermonic letter. Likewise, its Greek style, content, and theology suggest a different author, though one acquainted with Pauline churches. The author mentions Timothy as a “brother” (Heb 13:23). Scholars normally break down the 13 Pauline letters as follows: Undisputed letters of... Read more

Forget Ananias? A Minor Character in Acts with a Big Role

Last updated on: June 19, 2025 at 11:05 pm   By B. J. Oropeza

What can we know about Ananias, a minor character from the book of Acts? If any person could claim to have played a major role in saving Paul the Apostle, it would be this guy. Unfortunately, we find him mentioned nowhere in Scripture except in Acts. What can we learn from him? When Paul Met Ananias The two passages in Acts that speak of Ananias include the first narrative about Paul’s Damascus experience (Acts 9) and Paul’s first speech about... Read more
