You have probably heard a number of things Jesus supposedly said that he never actually did say. Here are 8 things Jesus never said:

Did Jesus in the Bible really say these popular sayings? (“book woman hands” via pixabay.com)
1. God helps those who help themselves
Neither Jesus nor the Bible actually says these words. And although the recent Christopher Nolan film, The Odyssey, has Odysseus (Matt Damon) saying “the gods help those who help themselves,” we search in vain to find these words in Homer’s written epic. Even so, ancient Greeks do seem to have created the proverb, whether originating from Aesop’s Fables or in principle with other ancient writers. Christians then altered the Greeks’ saying to conform to a monotheistic understanding of “God” rather than “the gods.” This saying, in any case, may be helpful advice for individuals who want to sit on their rumps and not do anything to change their situation. Whenever we step out in true faith, God honors our endeavors.
2. God works in mysterious ways
This saying may be true, but once again, neither Jesus nor the Bible says it. A search online reveals William Cowper’s 18th century hymn, “Light Shining Out of Darkness” has the line “God works in a mysterious way.” I also heard the saying emphasized in a popular 1941 film about the life of Sergeant York (played by Gary Cooper), an American hero from World War I. No doubt, the film helped boost the saying’s popularity. And then half a century later, U2’s hit song, “Mysterious Ways,” echoed the proverb.
3. Money is the root of all evil
When growing up, I first heard this saying from Pink Floyd’s song, “Money” from their famous Dark Side of the Moon album. This saying is much older, though. It does come from the Bible, but not from Jesus. It is found in the New Testament in 1 Timothy 6:10: “For the love of money is the root of all evil, which some striving for it have been led astray from the faith and pierced with many pangs.”
4. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Even though these words are famously found in John 3:16, it is doubtful that Jesus actually said this, despite red-letter editions of the Bible attributing it to him. Jesus is not saying this to Nicodemus. Rather, it is the author of John’s Gospel who is making this comment for his readers. On this point, see further my post (click here) regarding this verse.
5. You reap what you sow
Actually, it was Paul, not Jesus, who says something like this in Galatians 6:7: “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked—what one sows, that also will one reap.” Paul continues by encouraging the Galatians to sow to the Holy Spirit and reap eternal life. The person who sows to their flesh (the sinful nature) will reap destruction. We find similar words in the Old Testament (e.g., Hosea 8:7).
6. God will never give you more than you can handle
Although Jesus never said these words, they do appear to be paraphrased from Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 10:13. The NET Bible puts it this way: “No trial has overtaken you that is not faced by others. And God is faithful: He will not let you be tried beyond what you are able to bear, but with the trial will also provide a way out so that you may be able to endure it.” The actual context, however, has to do with being tempted to sin (here, idolatry). It was not about enduring suffering or other such trials. The sure-fire way to escape temptation to sin, as Paul says in the very next verse, is to flee from it!
7. Love the sinner, hate the sin
This is a great saying, but Jesus never said it, nor is it found in the Bible. In principle, however, Jesus lived this saying by becoming friends with those whom the scribes and Pharisees considered “sinners.” Jesus responds to these critics by saying, “Those who are healthy have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have come not to call the righteous but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:31–32).
8. Cleanliness is next to godliness
Ironically, Jesus says almost the exact opposite when contesting the religious leaders of his day who criticized his disciples. The disciples were eating without washing their hands according to the prescribed tradition of oral rules on purity. Jesus claims that what goes into the body (food) is not what defiles a person, but what comes out of them is what can defile them. Because from within arise evil thoughts, fornication, adultery, greediness, envy, pride, etc. (see Mark 7:1–23; also, Matt 15:1–20).
Some attribute the popular saying to John Wesley, but in principle at least, it may go back much earlier. In the Jewish Mishnah, Rabbi Pinhas ben Yair (c. late 2nd century) says, “Heedfulness leads to cleanliness, cleanliness leads to cleanness, cleanness leads to abstinence, abstinence leads to holiness, holiness leads to modesty, modesty leads to the fear of sin, the fear of sin leads to piety, piety leads to the Holy Spirit, the Holy Spirit leads to the resurrection of the dead, and the resurrection of the dead comes through Elijah, blessed be his memory, Amen” (Jacob Neusner, The Mishnah : A New Translation, Yale University Press, 1988: 466).
