Jehovah Nissi: The Lord Is Our Banner

“The Amalekites came and attacked the Israelites at Rephidim. Moses said to Joshua, ‘Choose some of our men and go out to fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill with the staff of God in my hands.’

“So Joshua fought the Amalekites as Moses had ordered, and Moses, Aaron and Hur went to the top of the hill. As long as Moses held up his hands, the Israelites were winning, but whenever he lowered his hands, the Amalekites were winning. When Moses’ hands grew tired, they took a stone and put it under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up—one on one side, one on the other—so that his hands remained steady till sunset. So Joshua overcame the Amalekite army with the sword.

“Moses built an altar and called it Jehovah Nissi–The Lord is my Banner” (Exodus 17:1-15).

Today I want to ask, “What does banner mean biblically, and why is it important to us?”

In the Bible, a banner (or standard) represents a military rallying point, a sign of identity, and a symbol of God’s victory, protection, and love. The Hebrew word for banner in the Exodus 17 passage is nes.

The King James Bible Dictionary shows that scripture uses specific Hebrew words to describe different types of banners: Nes is the word for a lofty signal, pole, or banner raised high on a hill to rally troops or communicate an urgent message.

Psychologists tell us that all people have some basic needs in common. Some of those needs are physical, like food, shelter, clothing. But some of those basic needs are emotional, and their fulfillment is just as important for a person to maintain mental health. Those basic emotional needs are safety, acceptance, validation, and connection. When those basic needs are not met, a person falls into distress, unhappiness, and depression.

In verse 15 of Exodus 17, after a great victory, Moses names the altar, in Hebrew, Jehovah Nissi–the Lord is my Banner, showing that God is their source of victory, rescue and triumph. What has God defeated and what does He promise you under His banner?

Remember those basic needs: safety, acceptance, validation, and connection.

Jehovah Nissi Is Safety

In Numbers 2:2, the Israelites are instructed to pitch their tents around the Tabernacle, each family and tribe under their own specific standard or banner.

When we are living as a part of the family of God and living in His fellowship, He protects us from the attack of the enemy.

Psalm 91 tells us that “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge, He is my fortress, my God in whom I trust. Surely He will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge. His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. If you say, the Lord is my refuge and make the Most High your dwelling, no harm will overtake you. No disaster will come near your tent.”

What a promise of safety!

Jehovah Nissi Is Acceptance and Validation

In Isaiah 11:10–12, God promises to raise a banner for the peoples of Israel and of all the nations. His banner acts as a focal point that shows everyone the place to rally or gather together.

Ephesians 2:19-22 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In Him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in Him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

He promises us acceptance and validation. He has given us the right to be where He is, and tells us we are important there.

Jehovah Nissi Is Connection

In Song of Solomon 2:4, the bride describes the groom’s (or God’s) feeling toward her by saying, “His banner over me is love.”

1 John 4:7-19**:  “**Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

**“**This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.

“God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.

**“**We love because he first loved us.”

That is real connection! He not only promises to love us, but He promises that we can participate in His very nature–God is love!

Jehovah Nissi Is Our Victory Over Every Enemy

So we can say that Jehovah Nissi symbolizes a cover of safety, victory over the enemy, and connection to others. His banner is a wonderful picture of His protection and deliverance. His banner over us symbolizes His presence, His power and His provision. “God as our banner” is a symbol and reminder that we need to depend on Him for victory in our spiritual and emotional battles, and not rely on our own strength and effort.

Isaiah 18:3–All you inhabitants of the world, and you dwellers on the earth, when a banner is lifted up on the mountains, look! When the trumpet is blown, listen!

Psalm 60:4–You have given a banner to those who fear You, that it may be displayed because of the truth. Selah.

Isaiah 11:10–It will happen in that day that the nations will seek the root of Jesse, who stands as a banner of the peoples; and His resting place will be glorious.

“The root of Jesse” is Jesus Christ. If we once again revisit that Hebrew word *nes–*a lofty signal, pole, or banner raised high on a hill to rally troops or communicate an urgent message–we find a final connection.

John 3:14-15 tells us, “Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in Him.”

So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am He and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me” (John:8:28).

In John 12:32, Jesus says,”And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.”

Jesus Himself is our ultimate banner! He draws His people unto Himself, and with Him we find safety, acceptance, validation, and connection. With Him we have victory, rescue and triumph.

Will you lift Him up?

God bless you!
