A Day For Freedom

Emancipation Day is a holiday in Washington DC to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Compensated Emancipation Act.

President Abraham Lincoln enacted the historic law one year into the Civil War, preceding the widely known Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. On April 16, 1862, President Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act.

Why The Majority Of African Americans Do Not Celebrate this Holiday

The Emancipation Act was signed on April 16th, 1862. It is celebrated on the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War.

Originating in Galveston, Juneteenth has since been observed annually in the United States, celebrating African-American culture.

Its name is a portmanteau of the words “June” and “nineteenth”, as it is celebrated on the anniversary of June 19, 1865. The day was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law. Juneteenth became the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was adopted in 1983.

What Does God Say About Slavery?

The Scriptures mentions that humans can be slaves to sin itself, consumed by their passions.

God has established principles that will end slavery as practiced by the Romans and the world. God makes it clear that freedom is better than being a slave.

Moses was chosen by God as their great deliverer for the Jewish people out of Egyptian slavery. (Exodus 5:1). To this day, the Jews celebrate their freedom from Egypt with a feast called the Passover.

When we talk about slavery, we must define what we mean. If slavery is simply defined as the absence of freedom to do what one wants, that is a different definition that can be applied to all of us.

Dear God,

Thank you for being a strong deliverer. We know our pain will be turned into a celebration. Thank you for giving us a resilient heart and spirit.

-Amen
