Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
We homeschoolers spend so much time defending ourselves from people who think we are nuts, or selfish, or ill-informed that we tend to take ourselves too seriously. We should remedy that with lots of self-deprecating jokes, don’t you think? I’ll get us started, and you can add others.
Q: How does a home schooler change a light bulb?
A: First, mom checks three books on electricity out of the library, then the kids draw schematics of light bulb circuitry, read a biography of Thomas Edison and do a skit based on his life. Next, everyone studies the history of lighting methods, and learns to dip their own candles, made from wax they extracted from the beehive in their backyard. Next, everyone takes a trip to the store where they compare types of light bulbs as well as prices and figure out how much change they’ll get if they buy two bulbs for $1.99 and pay with a five dollar bill. On the way home, a discussion develops over the history of money and also Abraham Lincoln, as his picture is on the five dollar bill. Finally, after building a homemade ladder out of branches dragged from the woods, the light bulb is installed. And there is light.
(This joke works, of course, because it is dead on. Remember my post about ruining every great idea by turning it into an all-encompassing project?)
