It’s Nice To Be Known

Sometimes the boys say the sweetest things.

On the way home from his social skills group today, Zach showed me a book he made about his feelings.  When he showed me a page about feeling nervous around new people, I said, “Yeah.  I know it’s kind of hard for you to go to a house where you don’t know everybody.”

Zach looked over at me, and smiled, and said, “Of course you know that, Mom.  Because you know ME.”

Which was the nicest thing Zach has ever said to me.  I know him.  There would be no surprises in his feelings book because I know him.  And by the look on his face, being known feels pretty good to Zach.

Sometimes, though, knowing each other so well leads to less sweet observations.

Like this morning when I told Ezra that we were going to do a grown-up exercise video instead of one made for kids.  “Mommy needs to work out too, so you are going to have to be my helper today and do this video with me.”

“We gotta do your video because you’re so fat, right?”

“That’s right, buddy.”

Then he came over and rubbed my belly as he checked me out from head to toe. “Okay, Mom.  I’m gonna help you out. We’ll get you not fat in no time.”

I know it’s not usually kind to call people fat, but it was actually very sweet.  It turns out that even when what they know is not so nice, it’s nice to be known.
