You gotta tap that!

Tonight as I was putting the boys to bed, I prayed, “Thank you, God, for letting my boys tap a maple tree.”

“You’re still jealous of us, right Mom?” asked Ezra.

I don’t think I was jealous of my 6 and 8 year old sons.  I think I was just psyched that they had so much fun, learned so much, and came home from their naturalist class all fired up about tapping trees.  Really, I begrudge them nothing.

So on the way home, when they begged me to let them tap some more trees in our neighborhood, I considered it.  “You really want to make some syrup, huh?” I asked.

“No.  Not really,” answered Zach. “We did a taste experiment and the syrup from IHOP was better.  Did you know that it’s made out of corn?  I think the corn syrup is better.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell him that Mommy has very bad feelings about the corn lobby and that Daddy is a syrup snob, and that we will never have the good corn-syrup syrup in our house, the kind I grew up with and still prefer.  Our home, sweet, home is and will forever be of the maple variety.

So, yes Ez, maybe I am jealous.  But it’s not of those who tap maple trees, but rather those who get to tap the delicious Boysenberry Syrup at the IHOP.
