My sons, do not be negligent now, for the Lord has chosen you to stand before him and serve him, to minister before him and to burn incense. -2 Chronicles 29:11

King Hezekiah offered one of the best motivational talks in the Bible. The priest had become unfaithful, something the king sought to change. In his speech, he challenged them in four key ways.

First, he reminded them of their calling. They had been chosen by the Lord for their work.

Second, they were to stand and serve God. This was not a human calling to help other people, but a holy calling to honor God.

Third, they were to minister before the Lord. There was and is no higher privilege than to serve the Lord, to minister in his presence as the Levites enjoyed in the temple.

Fourth, they were to burn incense. In their time, this work was part of the ritual of leading in worship. Today, the rituals have changed for Christians. Ministers baptize believers, lead communion, pray, teach the Bible, among other duties, yet the duties of a minister are a holy privilege for those who faithfully complete them.

Remember today, do not be diligent. Wherever and whatever God has called you to be and do, serve him fully. He has chosen you and given you the ability to serve just as he desires.
