“David did not take the number of the men twenty years old or less, because the Lord had promised to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky.” -1 Chronicles 27:23

Hundreds of years after Abraham, 1 Chronicles cited the promise of God to him to make Israel as numerous as the stars in the sky. We may not see the significance of this statement. Its words rest filled with power for our time.

For example, the fulfillment of this promise took place centuries after God gave it to Abraham. Do you ever wonder why God would make a promise to a person that would not take place until long after the person’s lifetime? First, it brings glory to God, revealing his wisdom and power. Second, we find a connection from one generation to the next that is bound together by the promise of God.

Interestingly, we tend to want promises from God today that can also be fulfilled today. But the Lord does not always work this way. He may reveal something that will not be fulfilled until long after we walk this earth, both to inspire us and to encourage others. In fact, such a mission is the best kind. When God gives us a calling that outlasts our life, we can be certain that the impact will be tremendous. Why? He has something in store that includes us yet extends far beyond us in changing lives both in this world and for eternity.
