1 Chronicles 24: Written Words

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelek son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar.” -1 Chronicles 24:6

Written words hold tremendous value. In fact, 1 Chronicles 24 reveals that the written words of the scribe Shemaiah determined the order of how Levitical priests served for generations to follow.

While we may see a list of names in this chapter and find little significance, the Levites would have memorized this list and kept an orderly pattern of men who served in the temple at the proper times. These names determined when fathers were away from home, how families functioned as a result, and influenced the lives of anywhere Jews lived throughout the temple period.

Again, written words matter. They matter so much that the Bible was given to us as inspired, written words for our benefit. Our lives may be hectic and busy, but the priority of reading Scripture and living by it must remain a top priority. Further, its words can impact how we speak and what we write for others, sparking a reaction that can help many others who seek the Lord we serve.

Let’s talk about it on Facebook! Share your thoughts, pictures, or videos on handwriting Scripture.
