“When David was old and full of years, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.” -1 Chronicles 23:1

Becoming a leader isn’t easy, but giving up leadership is often more difficult. David nearly lost his kingdom when he hesitated to hand over leadership to his son Solomon. Yet when the time was forced upon him, David took the necessary steps to transition his leadership to his son, knowing that his end was near.

Today’s American evangelicalism is currently filled with a number of influential leaders who are nearing the end of their ministry leadership. Yet few are making the necessary preparations to hand off leadership to the next generation. My fear is that this lack of planning for new leadership will result in a tarnished legacy for many leaders, while at the same time creating more difficulty for future leaders God is raising up to lead the church in the future.

What is the answer? Just as David did, today’s senior leaders are called to prepare for succession. Those who serve these leaders will receive a blessing from them, inheriting an advantage that can allow more effective service to others in the days to come. May God raise up godly successors to fill the needs of the many faithful men and women who are leading the church today.

Let’s talk about it on Facebook! Share your thoughts, pictures, or videos on handwriting Scripture.
