2 Kings 5: God’s Plan Is Better Than Our Plan

13 Naaman’s servants went to him and said, “My father, if the prophet had told you to do some great thing, would you not have done it? How much more, then, when he tells you, ‘Wash and be cleansed’!” 14 So he went down and dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, as the man of God had told him, and his flesh was restored and became clean like that of a young boy. -2 Kings 5:13-14

Naaman expected Elisha to wave his hands or offers some kind of performance in order to heal him of leprosy. He didn’t. Instead, Elisha told him to dip himself into the Jordan River seven times.

Naaman left angry. If all it took was cleaning off in a river, couldn’t he have done that closer to home? How could washing seven times in the Jordan be the special healing he sought?

But Naaman’s plan was not God’s plan. The Lord simply wanted him to obey, regardless of whether the command was easy or difficult. When Naaman did, he was healed.

God still operates in our lives in a similar way today. He could use any way he wanted to reach us, but he chose the principles of Scripture to guide our spiritual lives. We may not fully understand his ways, but when we follow his ways, he heals us. In this case, he cleanses from sin and offers new life (John 3:16; 10:10).
