11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” -1 Kings 19:11-13

Sometimes God speaks by fire; others times he speaks in a whisper. Why the variation? Perhaps God knows how to best get our attention. Elijah had just called down first from heaven to win victory over the pagan prophets. Yet now he was on the run for his life. When God spoke to him on this occasion, it was not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a gentle whisper.

In this whisper, God gave him exactly what he needed in that moment.

God still does the same today.

We may look for fire, an earthquake, wind, or some other miraculous sign, but God often chooses to quietly communicate his will to us. His words are not always for the whole world to see, but just for us–to hear him and know he is there for us and with us through the storms of life. Listen for God today–whether by storm or by whisper. He is there, ready to meet your every need.
