2 David sent out his troops, a third under the command of Joab, a third under Joab’s brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. The king told the troops, “I myself will surely march out with you.”
3 But the men said, “You must not go out; if we are forced to flee, they won’t care about us. Even if half of us die, they won’t care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It would be better now for you to give us support from the city.”
4 The king answered, “I will do whatever seems best to you.” -2 Samuel 18:2-4
When King David sought to lead the attack, he told his troops, “I myself will surely march out with you.” His men had another plan.
They realized the battle was for the throne. If David went down, it didn’t matter what else happened in the battle. The kingdom would be lost. Instead, they fought in his place.
Could there be application for this principle today? In your organization or family, there are times when you may need to be the one to step up to the front line to protect your leader. If so, do not be afraid. Be courageous, knowing you have been called to serve the king.
Of even greater importance is our calling to serve Christ. He needs no protection, yet we are called to serve him with our lives. Daily we step to the front line of battle, knowing that there is a battle to be fought and a king to serve.
Today, protect your leaders. Most importantly, stand firm for the one who gave his life for you–the King Jesus Christ.
