2 “I am about to go the way of all the earth,” he said. “So be strong, act like a man, 3 and observe what the Lord your God requires…” -1 Kings 2:2-3
When David gave the kingdom to his son Solomon, he left him with bold words. Three key commands were presented that are worthy of our attention:
“Be strong”: Successful leadership requires strength. This includes physical, spiritual, and mental toughness that will help a leader endure times of challenge and difficulty.
“Act like a man”: This one is for the the fellows, but makes sense in the context of David speaking to his son. By acting like a man, he had in mind that Solomon couldn’t run the kingdom acting childish, but would need to show maturity and responsibility.
“Observe what the Lord your God requires”: Endurance and responsibility can take a person far, but not far enough. None of us is good enough on our own. We need God. Further, we not only need God; we also need to apply his wisdom in every area of life to fulfill his calling for us.
Endurance. Responsibility. Obedience. Three easy words to say yet difficult to live. Our challenge is to both know and apply these principles to our own challenges, knowing that God controls our destiny and will carry us through life’s situations as we follow him.
