2 Samuel 3: A Promise Fulfilled

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

17 Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, “For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the Lord promised David, ‘By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies.’” -2 Samuel 3:17-18

Samuel had long ago anointed David as the future king of Israel. Years had passed, yet David had been on the run from Saul, the Philistines, and endured much hardship. In 2 Samuel 3, this long-awaited prediction came true. David became king of Israel.

God often speaks of the good ahead of us without telling us what will happen in the meantime. From Moses in the desert for forty years to Paul in prison for his faith, God’s calling often includes difficult stages along the way.

For me, it was an important reminder that God keeps his promises. I also have to remember he does so according to his will and his timing, not mine.

This important lesson is as relevant today as it was to a former shepherd boy turned king three thousand years ago.

Let’s talk about it on Facebook! Share your thoughts, pictures, or videos on handwriting Scripture.
