9 Achish answered, “I know that you have been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God; nevertheless, the Philistine commanders have said, ‘He must not go up with us into battle.’ 10 Now get up early, along with your master’s servants who have come with you, and leave in the morning as soon as it is light.” -1 Samuel 29:9-10

Living with integrity gains the attention of even one’s enemies. David had been living among the Philistines and had planned to join in their upcoming battle. The main Philistine leader told one of his commanders to send David and his men home out of fear that they would join the enemy in battle. Yet the commander Achish stated that David had “been as pleasing in my eyes as an angel of God.”

Why this comment? There may be more than one reason, but one was that David stood out as admirable even to this Philistine leader. It strikes me as interesting that God often allows those who live for him to gain influence among those who would otherwise reject the teachings of the God of the Bible.

If David could influence non-Christian leaders by his lifestyle, what about us? While there are many differences between his situation and ours, we can certainly apply living out our beliefs among non-believers and use the influence God gives to help our communities and nation. But to do this, we must begin by living a God-honoring life that stands out from others.
