5 Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 6 He said to his men, “The Lord forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the Lord’s anointed, or lay my hand on him; for he is the anointed of the Lord.” 7 With these words David sharply rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. -1 Samuel 24:5-7

David’s enemy stood within his grasp. Should he kill Saul or not? Uneasy about killing the king of his nation, David cut off the corner of his robe instead. Yet even this act caused a problem–a guilty conscience.

David publicly shared with Saul what he had done and Saul took an oath to spare his life. David would eventually become king, but he did it the right way, God’s way, without killing the anointed one God had placed in charge of his nation.

Because he did, David walked with a clear conscience. This is the true mark of one who would be greatly used by God.
