“In accordance with the Lord’s command to him, Joshua gave to Caleb son of Jephunneh a portion in Judah—Kiriath Arba, that is, Hebron.” -Joshua 15:13
Only two men over the age of twenty when they left Egypt would live to see the promised land. Both are mentioned in the same verse in Joshua 15:13. Joshua and Caleb were the two who trusted in God after the report of overpowering enemies years earlier. Years later, these two men would live to see God’s promises fulfilled.
What did this promise include? New land, of course, but also more. A new nation had emerged, and one coming from the most unlikely source–Egyptian slavery.
This transformation was so dramatic that the story would be used again years later in the words of Martin Luther King, Jr. as he described the promised land. In the last speech given before his tragic assassination, King spoke of being like Moses, who stood on the mountaintop and could see the promised land, though he had not yet entered.
A promised fulfilled is a deep satisfaction.
In our lives, one application would be to make sure we do what we say. When we fail to keep our commitments to others, our relationships grow weaker. Yet when our words can be trusted, our relationship deepens. Today, let us begin by trusting in God and his words, committing our day to keeping our word to those in our lives.
