“But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.” -Joshua 13:33
Some would say the tribe of Levi got a bad deal. After 40 years in the wilderness, they were the one tribe not given a land of inheritance for themselves. Why not?
Verse 33 notes, “But to the tribe of Levi Moses gave no inheritance; the Lord God of Israel is their inheritance, just as he said to them.” While God was over all of Israel, the Levites were those set apart to care for the tabernacle and the sacrifices. Rather than being left out, they had been called out as those with the special work of leading the nation in worship of the Lord.
Today there those who see ministers and missionaries as those who are missing out on the good life the rest of the world seems to be enjoying. Yet the opposite is true. Those who serve God as their vocation enjoy worship as well as help others to grow in the Lord. Even better, with the coming of Jesus, all Christians are called as a nation of priests and as ministers. The Protestant Reformation’s cry to affirm the priesthood of all believers remains true today.
The special privilege the Levites enjoyed in the past is now a blessing all believers can experience today. Ministry is not for the minister; it’s for all believers. To use the basketball analogy, we are called to leave the bench and get into the game.
