“34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.” -Joshua 8:34-35

When life falls apart, it’s easy for Christians to run to God for help. But when life goes well, it’s easy to forget about God and focus on success. This dynamic certainly existed in Joshua’s time as well. How did he deal with it? By remembering the word of God.

Joshua had been commanded from the start to meditate on the word of the Lord. In Joshua 8, his army had defeated the city of Ai, just as God had predicted. Then came the decision point. Would Joshua celebrate his greatness or give credit to God? We are told, “Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel.” Rather than focus on accomplishment, Joshua focused on the Lord. Such a pattern became the key to his leadership.

Today, something may go well and there will be temptation to forget God and take the credit for it. But don’t. Choose to remember God’s Word, give him the glory, and follow the pattern of Joshua. Then you will truly be successful.
