“If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin.” -Deuteronomy 23:21
Keep your promises to God. To fail to do so is called sin in Deuteronomy 23. Even better, we are told in the following words that it is better not to make such promises unless we intend to keep them.
Jesus later addressed this to those he taught. He said to let your yes be yes and your no be no and that anything beyond this was of the devil. Why? It revealed a lack of integrity. When a person says he or she will do something, those who follow through are considered of high value and integrity. Those who do not are not.
This is the principle in use in this passage in reference to God. We are not to make commitments to God lightly. Rather, our words to him are to be made with seriousness, reverence, the expectation that we will do all we can to follow through.
