Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a sign or wonder, 2 and if the sign or wonder spoken of takes place, and the prophet says, “Let us follow other gods” (gods you have not known) “and let us worship them,” 3 you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul. 4 It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. -Deuteronomy 13:1-4
How do you know if a prophet is telling the truth? In a day when many claim to speak for God, how can you know who is really representing the true God?
Deuteronomy 13 provided guidelines for the people of Israel to use in this matter. They were told that if anyone performed a miracle or gave a prophecy told them to follow a different god, they were to be ignored. Anyone who promoted worship of another god could not be speaking for God.
How often we forget this in our day. Religious channels, books, and websites are filled with voices claiming to tell the future or provide miracles. One way to evaluate whether these could be of God is to see who they acknowledge. If the person is urging hearers to worship a god other than the Lord of the Bible, the person’s teachings must be rejected.
