Deuteronomy 12: No Compromise Worship

Deuteronomy 12: No Compromise Worship 2012-08-16T11:32:26-04:00 Dillon Burroughs

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“1 These are the decrees and laws you must be careful to follow in the land that the Lord, the God of your ancestors, has given you to possess—as long as you live in the land. 2 Destroy completely all the places on the high mountains, on the hills and under every spreading tree, where the nations you are dispossessing worship their gods. 3 Break down their altars, smash their sacred stones and burn their Asherah poles in the fire; cut down the idols of their gods and wipe out their names from those places. 4 You must not worship the Lord your God in their way.” -Deuteronomy 12:1-4

God gave his people one way to worship–his way. His method was not a cafeteria religion of eclecticism. The Lord Almighty of Israel explicitly forbid such mingling, commanding, “You must not worship the Lord in their way.”

While the Bible gives much freedom regarding how Christians worship today, it is still important to adhere to the distinctives of the Christian faith. This is why some of the practices used in contemporary churches are of concern. At what point does a contemporary practice mirror that of another religion? For example, drama is an art form, but how much is too much? What kind of drama goes too far? These same questions could be made of film, painting, dance, technology, and many other practices in the church.

The important point observed here is that these issues are important to consider. Does our worship honor God without compromise? Any area of compromise is to be removed. God is worthy of our worship–all of it–without compromise.
