1 Peter 2: This World Is Not Our Home

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

“11 Dear friends, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles, to abstain from sinful desires, which wage war against your soul. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.” -1 Peter 2:11-12

It is easier to live with an eternal perspective when you realize this world is not our home. Peter used the example of the immigrant or exile to illustrate that those of us who follow Jesus are just visiting this world. Our true citizenship is in heaven.

When this attitude is taken in our daily lives, possessions no longer possess us. Temptation can be seen for what it is–a distraction from the calling God has for our lives.

Specifically, Peter calls believers to lives such good lives among unbelievers that rather than accusing us of wrong, they will see God at work in us.  In the end, even they will give glory to God because of our actions.

Today, remember–this world is not home. Second, your actions can even cause those who do not believe to glorify God. Let us live today looking forward to that future day when Jesus returns. Only then will we truly be home.
