“6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” -Colossians 2:6-7

In many church circles, coming to know Jesus is a step of faith; living for him is not. After making the plunge into Christianity, the moral list of do’s and don’ts is revealing, offering a code to make the nice list rather than the naughty list among the insiders.

There’s one problem with this often-experienced scenario–it’s not in the Bible.

Yes, there are things we are to do and not do, but Paul explains how the biblical scenario is unique–and superior–to other moral systems of religion. First, we come to know God by faith. It is a gift. As a result, we are called to a life of worship.

But second, after we receive God’s gift of salvation, each step of the journey is by faith too. The same faith that connected us to God through Jesus is the faith that extends throughout our journey. Some call it practicing God’s presence; others walking by the Spirit, but the idea is the same. Each moment of our lives as believers is an adventure of faith–a pilgrimage exceeding any pursuit this world offers and extending into eternity future.

The discovery of this teaching among this generation of believers may be the missing element in a truly alive church–a community of believers in Jesus who love God, live for him, and share Christ’s love through word and deed to the ends of the earth.
