Sometimes I come across a person who expresses doubt that God loves them. I used to struggle with how to respond. However, reflecting on Paul’s words in Romans 5 has provided me with the best answer I have found to this issue. In verse 8, he wrote:

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

The “proof” of God’s love for us is the death of Jesus. While we may not like the idea of contemplating the gruesome death of an innocent man, the point is that Jesus died for us. The focus is not his pain, but his proof of love expressed through his death.

As the preceding verse note, “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.” In other words, people don’t find excitement in dying for other people. It happens on occasion, but it’s rare. For someone to die for us before we were born just to give us a chance to know God and spend eternity with him is unmatched in the human experience. Jesus offers love above and beyond anything comparable on earth.

His death is his proof. This is how we know God loved us.
