John 9: You Are More

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

John 9 begins with these words:

1 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?”    3 “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

Culturally, the followers of Jesus believed blindness, along with other disabilities, were due to someone’s sin. They were curious whether this particular man’s blindness was due to his own sins or those of his parents.

Jesus rejected this lie.

He answered, “This happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.”

In this account, Jesus healed the blind man. But I think his answer would be true even if he had not given the blind man his sight.

God does not allow suffering, pain, or even a disability for no reason. We may never understand what happens to us in this life, but we can understand that our weaknesses, whether a physical disability or any area of weakness in life, causes us to see our need for a Savior, a Healer, One who can make everything new.

You are more than your weakness, your disability, your past, your pain. You are a child of God.

You are more.
