Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.
As the earth turns, Vancouver is blessed with long days. Over the past few weeks, we have had lots of variation in cloud cover. Bright blue skies give way to puffy clouds to grey blankets and then, the sky throws back the covers and the sun shines through once again. It can be quite confusing to know how to dress!
I spend a lot of time at St. James Anglican Church these days. The windows are not stained glass, or even see through clear. They are simple, opaque glass windows. What we get from outside are the abstract patterns of light as the sun dances across the sky and the illuminated patterns waft like lazy incense smoke across walls, ceiling and floor. This sacred dance of light reminds me of something CS Lewis wrote: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.” The light is not the sun, but it points to the sun. The darkness is not the sun, but it also points back to the sun. I am very grateful for the great flux between light and darkness here in Vancouver; between day and night, between winter and summer, between Good Friday and Easter.
