Fanaticism Versus True Christian Conviction

Last updated on: March 19, 2026 at 1:27 am   By Henry Karlson

Fanaticism has people so focused on their own ideological perspectives that they lose sight of the common good. They become so hyper-focused on achieving their ideological end, they are willing to sacrifice anyone and everything to promote it. This is one of the many reasons why fundamentalism is dangerous, and why, in the Christian faith, fundamentalism, with its fanaticism, leads to ungodly beliefs and practices. Fundamentalism, when combined with the zeal of the fanatic, can even lead to its adherents... Read more

My Engagements With World Religions: Mutual Respect

Last updated on: March 18, 2026 at 2:00 am   By Henry Karlson

Studying other faiths, listening to people of other faiths, learning to interpret their Scriptures and dogmatic teachings based upon how they understand them (instead of how they are presented in polemical treatises by their critics), has helped me appreciate those faiths better. It has led me to see why people believe in them, and the good which has come out of such beliefs.  I have seen that interfaith dialogue is better than apologetics, because apologetics  looks at judging and condemning... Read more

The Call For Peace Amidst Unjust Warfare In Iran

Last updated on: March 16, 2026 at 1:58 am   By Henry Karlson

While Trump seems to constantly change his mind as to what he wants from the Iran War, he has indicated that to end it, Iran must declare an “unconditional surrender.” Anyone following the just war tradition knows that this is an illegitimate goal; wars must be fought defensively, and their goal must be a cessation hostilities which allows for restorative justice (and the enemies reconciling, if possible). Unconditional surrender is not about justice, but revenge (or, in a situation in... Read more

Reflections For Lent 2026 Part Four: Joseph, Egypt And Sin

Last updated on: March 15, 2026 at 2:01 am   By Henry Karlson

The story of Joseph, despite the tragedy, despite the betrayal and abuse Joseph experienced at the hands of his brothers, seems to end happily for Joseph and his family. Joseph had risen high into Egyptian society, becoming one of the most powerful men in it. He wisely predicted that Egypt, and the region surrounding it, would experience a terrible, long-lasting famine, and he made sure Egypt would be prepared for it. In this way, he was able to help many... Read more

Eschatology In Action: How Christians Live Out The Eschaton

Last updated on: March 12, 2026 at 1:18 am   By Henry Karlson

Christians are expected to live their lives with the realization that, with the advent of Christ, they are living in the “end times.” This does not mean they will see the end of the world in their lifetime (though they might); rather, they are to engage the way in the incarnation the eschaton has become immanent with material creation. God the Word, who is the “first’ in and through whom all things are made, is also the “last” to whom... Read more

My Engagements With World Religions: Other Faiths

Last updated on: March 11, 2026 at 2:05 am   By Henry Karlson

While the focus of my religious engagements, inter-religious studies, and comparative theology have been with Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism, I have not limited myself to them. Through the years, I’ve investigated and read from a wide variety of religious faiths (and, if possible, talked to people from them, or went to lectures or events sponsored by them). I am interested in having a general knowledge of the religious landscape, in part, as a way to discover the sparks of... Read more

Challenging Traditionalist Views On Liturgical Praxis

Last updated on: March 9, 2026 at 2:04 am   By Henry Karlson

An issue I have with many so-called traditionalists, Catholic or Orthodox, is that they do not know history, and the development and changes which have happened in religious praxis throughout Christian history. They don’t know or appreciate tradition, that tradition is meant to be living and not a dead-end. They think various practices they like have always been and should always be what is practiced. Similarly, they think their interpretation of them has always been how they were always interpreted.... Read more

Reflections For Lent 2026 Part Three: The Fall Of Adam

Last updated on: March 8, 2026 at 1:16 am   By Henry Karlson

Scripture does not specifically provide us a singular origin for evil. It presupposes some sort of evil was already present in the world before the fall of Adam and Eve. There are suggestions that indicate Satan and other similar spirits had their own fall due to pride. One of the ways that pride was interpreted by people of many different religious traditions is that Satan was unwilling to bow down to and show respect to humanity (a tradition which is... Read more

Rethinking Creation: Misogyny In Abrahamic Traditions

Last updated on: March 5, 2026 at 2:23 am   By Henry Karlson

Interfaith dialogues can help people not only better see and appreciates the commonalities and differences between various faiths,  but to have people of those faiths discern problems they have in common, problems which they can engage together, hoping that by doing so, they can find a solution to them which will help all involved. We find this happening many times, such as in the way feminist Muslim theologian Riffat Hassan saw her work with Jews and Christians helped her see... Read more

My Engagements With World Religions: Reflections (Two)

Hinduism and Buddhism, just like Christianity, Judaism and Islam, share many things in common. Studying one helps in studying the other. For those in the West, this means learning to think and see things through a different cultural perspective. This is something I not only learned but tried to teach my students when I taught classes on Hinduism and Buddhism. I often used a thought experiment to do so. I told them to imagine they were an archeologist from thousands... Read more
