How do you react to news of atrocities?

Last updated on: August 11, 2014 at 12:06 pm   By Kevin Miller

This question came up today as I read this Gospel Coalition article that questions the reports of ISIS beheading children in Iraq and then placing their heads on pikes. I reacted instinctively against this story the first time I heard it; not because I don’t believe people are capable of such behavior but because it reeked of a much broader attempt to portray ISIS as so absolutely and irredeemably evil that they simply have to be destroyed. Dehumanization of the enemy is textbook strategy for searing... Read more

Victimhood: a double-edged sword

Last updated on: August 7, 2014 at 8:19 am   By Kevin Miller

As Stephen Pinker argues convincingly in his book The Better Angels of Our Nature: Why Violence Has Declined, our sensitivity toward victims has increased substantially over the last several centuries, leading to a drastic reduction in violence. By way of example, it’s practically impossible today for any government, organization or individual to act in a discriminatory, aggressive or violent manner before before the global community blows the whistle and cries foul. This is particularly true when a huge power imbalance exists between the... Read more

Perhaps violence isn’t so black and white after all…

Last updated on: July 3, 2014 at 8:19 am   By Kevin Miller

To kill one man is to be guilty of a capital crime, to kill ten men is to increase the guilt ten-fold, to kill a hundred men is to increase it a hundred-fold. This the rulers of the earth all recognize, and yet when it comes to the greatest crime–waging war on another state–they praise it! If a man on seeing a little black were to say it is black, but on seeing a lot of black were to say... Read more

Idiots, Maniacs and Me

Last updated on: June 19, 2014 at 9:14 am   By Kevin Miller

I spend a lot of time arguing with people on Facebook. Perhaps too much time. But as I’m writing a script or doing some other sort of creative work, I find it helpful to jump back and forth between whatever I’m writing and whatever I’m arguing about. I used to play chess and Scrabble online for the same reason, but this is a pretty good alternative, because it allows me to play against multiple opponents at once. I make a... Read more

Frank’s book is called Why I’m an Atheist Who Believes in God. I had the pleasure of editing an early draft of the book for Frank, and I have to say it’s one of the most powerful, heartfelt, challenging books I’ve read in a long time. It was just released today in paperback for a discounted price. You can get it here. Kindle version to come soon. BONUS: If you buy the book over the next 72 hours, you qualify... Read more

Why aren’t more evangelical Christians making horror movies?

Last updated on: April 7, 2014 at 4:01 pm   By Kevin Miller

Years before I began my career as a screenwriter/filmmaker, I met a guy named Murray Stiller who was hot on the idea of making horror movies from a Christian perspective. I admit to being intrigued, even though the idea struck me as odd at the time. But as Murray made his case, I came to see that horror movies should come as naturally to evangelical Christians as breathing. Think about it: For many evangelicals, the gospel is a horror story.... Read more
