Teaser trailer for my next documentary

Last updated on: September 17, 2013 at 5:44 am By Kevin Miller

I’ve just launched an IndieGoGo campaign to finance post-production on my new documentary The 5&2, which is about the City of Abbotsford, BC’s attempt to disperse it’s homeless population by dumping chicken manure on one of their camps. Here is the teaser trailer: “The 5&2” Teaser Trailer from Kevin Miller on Vimeo. I’m seeking $50,000 to fund post-production on the film. You can read all about the campaign here. Below is a five-minute video where I explain what inspired me... Read more

Two (make that three) mistakes fundamentalists make

Last updated on: September 14, 2013 at 11:14 am By Kevin Miller

Mistake #1: Failing to distinguish between an interpretation of their sacred text and the text, itself. Mistake #2: Giving undue authority to their particular interpretation of that text. These lead naturally to… Mistake #3: Defending that interpretation at all costs, b/c what they really think they are defending is the text, itself. This leads me to ponder three questions: Question #1: In what ways have I confused my interpretation of the text for the text, itself? Question #2: What leads... Read more

Christian fundamentalism–another gospel? Guest post by Michael Hardin

Last updated on: September 14, 2013 at 5:53 am By Kevin Miller

Michael Hardin is a mimetic theorist, author of The Jesus Driven Life, and co-founder of Preaching Peace. Perhaps better known as “the guy with the ponytail in Hellbound?“. He posted this on his Facebook page today, and I simply had to repost it here. But thank God, who is always leading us around through Christ as if we were in a parade. He releases the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere through us. We smell like the aroma of... Read more

Parodies of this scene with Hitler never get old for me. I like everything about this except the “Don’t think like Hitler” bit at the end. Read more

Frank Schaeffer’s new novel is now available on Amazon

Last updated on: September 10, 2013 at 7:49 am By Kevin Miller

It’s called And God Said, Billy!, and in my opinion, it’s one of the best things Frank has ever written. The product of 17 years of working out his own salvation with fear, trembling, anger and a radical encounter with grace, the novel is a biting satire of the fundamentalist Christian subculture Frank left behind and a daring plunge into the depths of uncertainty and humility in the face of a God and a universe loathe to divulge their secrets.... Necessity, invention and why Hollywood is doomed to fail

Last updated on: September 3, 2013 at 2:11 pm By Kevin Miller

Most of us have heard the phrase “Necessity is the mother of invention” so often that we never stop to question it. On a gut level, the narrative it creates in our mind seems undeniably true: Someone encounters a problem or need, so he or she devises a clever means by which to solve that problem or meet that need. Register the patent, cue the applause and let the money-printing begin. There’s just one problem with this story: It almost... Read more

The last thing I’ll say about the Trinity situation

Last updated on: August 29, 2013 at 7:26 pm By Kevin Miller

After two amicable phone calls with the Dean and the Chair of the School of the Arts, Media and Culture, I’ve come to see my situation a bit more clearly. Primarily, I’ve come to understand that the reason I have been barred from teaching at Trinity has to do with the fact that my “clarifying statement” re: article 10 of the university’s statement of faith went beyond simple clarification and into an outright contradiction of said article. At least that... Read more

Faith statements–a pretext for scapegoating?

Last updated on: August 29, 2013 at 9:49 am By Kevin Miller

My recent situation with Trinity Western University is a reminder of why I’ve always had difficulty with faith statements. On the one hand, I don’t think I’ve ever read a faith statement with which I can agree wholeheartedly. And I don’t think I’m alone in this. I often tend to disagree with myself mid-sentence, so that shouldn’t come as any surprise. Therefore, when faced with the prospect of signing a faith statement, which I’ve had to do several times over... Read more
