Two Baptist leaders express opposing views on Trump, abortion

Last updated on: November 1, 2020 at 4:34 pm   By Bethany Blankley

In a recent column, John Piper, the founder of desiringGod.org, former chancellor of Bethlehem College and Seminary and former pastor at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, recently argued that boastfulness is worse than abortion, and because President Donald J. Trump is boastful he says he did not vote for him. In a recent article Piper wrote, “I think it is baffling and presumptuous to assume that pro-abortion policies kill more people than a culture-saturating, pro-self pride. When a leader models self-absorbed,... Read more

Last updated on: October 27, 2020 at 11:59 am   By Bethany Blankley

The International Religious Freedom Act was signed into law 22 years ago today on October 27, 1998. The bipartisan bill was designed to promote religious freedom as a foreign policy of the United States, to foster greater religious freedoms in countries that are intolerant of religious freedom, and to advocate for people who are persecuted because of their religious beliefs. To commemorate the anniversary, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights, is hosting a virtual... Read more

Barna Research: pastors silent on political issues despite congregants wanting them to speak up [videos]

Last updated on: October 27, 2020 at 11:35 am   By Bethany Blankley

A recent Barna Research Group study reveals that many pastors are silent on what they consider “political” issues; yet their congregants don’t want them to be. “As the U.S. presidential election looms, pastors might wonder how to lead well during this time of increased tension,” the report states. “If our data on the tug-of-war for their engagement is any indication, they likely feel there is no way to win with all of their congregants. “Regardless of whether pastors are talking about political... Read more

Last updated on: October 26, 2020 at 1:35 pm   By Bethany Blankley

Of the roughly 32 lawsuits that have been filed since March against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, many allege his executive orders violate the religious liberty clauses of the California Constitution. Twenty-two active cases address religious freedom violations, education policies, forced closures of businesses, alleged violations of federal and state laws, and grievances by landlords. At least 10 of the 32 have been dropped or ruled on; some of the 22 active cases have been amended since their initial filing. Some... Read more

An employee at the University of Virginia Health System (UVA Health) has been threatened with disciplinary action despite asking for a religious accommodation from the flu vaccine several times. And this is just one version of a flu vaccine; there are several. None are guaranteed to work and for the 2020-2021 flu season, all four flu viruses used in the Flucelvax Quadrivalent are animal cell-derived, the Centers for Disease Control states. None use aborted fetal tissue, although numerous vaccines do. “The cell-based... Read more

Last updated on: October 21, 2020 at 2:15 pm   By Bethany Blankley

While being interviewed for a feature-length documentary about himself called, “Francesco,” Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, said: “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family. They are children of God.” The film premiered Wednesday at the Rome Film Festival, one week after a major sex trial began at the Vatican. The claims against an alleged homosexual priest were made in 2012, first exposed by Italian journalists. Attempts were allegedly made to cover up the abuse,... Read more
