Can animals be victims of slavery? PETA thinks so and files a lawsuit on behalf of SeaWorld orcas

Last updated on: October 25, 2011 at 7:30 pm   By Joanne Brokaw

The Associated Press reported that People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is planning to file a lawsuit on October 26, 2011 asking federal courts “to grant constitutional rights to five killer whales who perform at marine parks.” Specifically, PETA is alleging that SeaWorld keeps whales in conditions that violate the 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits slavery and involuntary servitude. PETA claims those rights are not limited to humans. I don’t make this stuff up. (more…) Read more

Sweaters for penguins campaign brings in hundreds of donations

Last updated on: October 24, 2011 at 8:52 pm   By Joanne Brokaw

In the weeks since, nearly 1,300 birds have died as a result of the spill. But some crafty bird lovers jumped at the chance to help – knitting sweaters for penguins. When I first saw... Read more

Friday Food For Thought, from Suzanne Clothier

Last updated on: November 17, 2011 at 7:54 pm   By Joanne Brokaw

“The leading cause of death in dogs in Western countries is behavior – unacceptable, uncontrollable, inappropriate behavior. Not disease. Not being hit by a car. Not neglect or abuse (though an argument could be made that a failure to train a dog so that he can act appropriately is precisely a form of neglect and abuse). If we fail to develop a high quality of connection with our dogs, we may fail them in the most terrible of ways, and... Read more

Last updated on: October 20, 2011 at 5:08 pm   By Joanne Brokaw

The headlines yesterday were filled with stories about Terry Thompson, the owner of the 73-acre Muskingum County Animal Farm, who opened the cages on his wildlife farm before killing himself, releasing lions and tigers and bears (and more) into the community of Zanesville, OH. By last night, according to a Reuters’ news story, all of the animals had either been killed or captured; the only one unaccounted for was a macaque monkey who is possibly carrying the Herpes B virus. It’s... Read more

Book review: The Lost Dogs by Jim Gorant

Last updated on: October 20, 2011 at 12:27 pm   By Joanne Brokaw

In 2007, then Atlanta Falcons’ quarterback Michael Vick was indicted in a dogfighting case that rocked the sports world and struck a nerve with animal lovers everywhere. The case made international headlines and begged the question, How could an athlete with the world at his feet be so cruel to animals? But more importantly – and almost entirely overlooked – is what happened to the 51 pit bulls taken from Vick’s Bad Newz Kennels. (more…) Read more

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. – Genesis 1:24, 25 NKJV I’ve never been big fan of the... Read more

Last updated on: July 1, 2011 at 7:55 pm   By Deborah Arca

By Galen Dalrymple As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.  (Psalm 42:1) I had heart surgery in 2002, and after the surgery I had eight weeks to recuperate before I was summoned back to work.  This gave me a great opportunity to get re-acquainted with my wife, our daughter, and our dogs.  In all those things, I considered myself to be fortunate and blessed.  While time with my wife and daughter... Read more
