Nowzad Dogs Reunites Servicemen and Women with the Dogs they Befriended while Deployed Over Seas

Last updated on: November 17, 2011 at 9:58 pm By Joanne Brokaw

Imagine for a moment befriending a dog during your most stressful and lonely time, away from family and friends, fighting in a foreign land. Then imagine leaving your canine companion behind when your tour of duty is over. Pen Farthing, a former British Royal Marine who served in Afghanistan and witnessed firsthand the extraordinary bond forged between soldiers and the dogs they befriended, knows how that feels. While serving in the war torn town of Now Zad in the Helmand Province... Read more

Daniel the dog survives gas chamber, gets new home

Last updated on: November 17, 2011 at 10:38 am By Joanne Brokaw

On October 3, 18 dogs were put into a gas chamber at a shelter in Florence, Alabama. When the gassing was over, one 20-pound beagle mix walked out, tail wagging. Think of it as a Shadrack, Meschach and Abednago moment. It’s not unheard of for a dog to survive the gas chamber, but it isn’t common, either. And when it happens, the dog is often given a reprieve. In this case, the dog, now named Daniel, was sent to Eleventh ... Read more

Image of Jesus on dog’s butt God’s second appearance?

Last updated on: November 16, 2011 at 9:53 am By Joanne Brokaw

Facebook, where old fads get a second life, has offered up a new photo: an image of Jesus on a dog’s butt. The current photo making the rounds appears to be that of a pug or pug mix, shared by Reddit user Feature_Creature, with the title “It’s a MIRACLE! Take that Jesus Toast. It shows what certainly looks like Jesus on the dog’s rear end. But is this an old story or another appearance of God on a dog? In 2006, Jessica... Read more

Texas court rules owners can sue for sentimental value of dog mistakenly euthanized by shelter

Last updated on: November 15, 2011 at 1:36 pm By Joanne Brokaw

Watch “The People’s Court” long enough and you’ll hear Judge Milan say that in the eyes of the law, pets are property and owners are only entitled to the “market value” of their dogs, regardless of how they were injured or killed. But a Texas court this week set a ground breaking precident when they ruled that a Ft. Worth family could recover the sentimental value of their dog, who was mistakenly euthanized at a local animal shelter. According to... Read more

PETA tackles Super Mario and his tanooki (raccoon dog) fur coat

Last updated on: November 14, 2011 at 9:10 pm By Joanne Brokaw

People For The Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has launched a new campaign aimed at Super Mario with the release of their new game, Super Tanooki Skin 2D. The game is in response to the “power up’ in Mario Bros. games, which give Mario and Luigi extra power to … um … do something … OK, if I sound more than a little uninformed it’s because I know zip about video games. All I know is that there is a suit that... Read more

Featured rescue animal in need of a home: Gibbs, the FeLV positive kitty

Last updated on: November 14, 2011 at 6:37 pm By Joanne Brokaw

Back in October, my friend Beth, a cat lover of the highest order, told me about a kitty her friend found shivering behind a restaurant here in Rochester, NY. Beth’s friend brought the kitty home, named him Gibbs, and took him to the vet, where she found out he has feline leukemia. That means he can’t live with her other cats, so he needs to find a home that either has no cats or other FeLV positive kitties. Right now, Gibbs is... Read more

Streams of contentment and lessons learned from animals

Last updated on: November 14, 2011 at 7:29 pm By Joanne Brokaw

In the classic song, “Thank God I’m A Country Boy,” John Denver sang, “Life on the farm is kinda laid back”; I’ve always wondered what he meant by that. I visited a dairy farm once and believe me, the amount of work needed to feed, milk, and otherwise care for cows and then get the milk to processing was certainly not laid back. It was arduous to the nth degree. Now that I’m older, I realize Denver wasn’t talking about the... Read more

Cat stuck on cactus for three days; when you’re in a jam, sometimes you just have to jump

Last updated on: November 14, 2011 at 4:44 pm By Joanne Brokaw

A kitty in a desert area northeast of Phoenix, AZ recently spent three days atop a giant cactus. Residents of the area noticed that cat and were looking for ways to get him down. But when a news helicopter flew overhead, the kitty decided he’d had enough and scrambled down. No one knows how the kitty found his way to the top of the giant cactus, but who among us hasn’t found themselves stranded in a difficult situation with no way... Read more
