Luke has received his training as part of the Mutts with Manners program, which pairs prison inmates with shelter dogs.

In honor of National Shelter and Rescue Appreciation Week, here is another adoptable pet (courtesy of DogTime Save A Dog!):

Luke is one of five dogs in the Mutts With Manners program, part of the Danville-Boyle Co. Humane Society (DBCHS) in Danville, KY.  According to the DBCHS website, ten inmates and 5 shelter dogs work together for 6 weeks with a professional trainer, prison staff and volunteers to provide the dogs with basic obedience training, socialization, behavior modification, and one-on-one companionship.

The inmates and the dogs live together in the prison dormitory, attending weekly training sessions and following a strict training regimen that provides the dogs with the structure they need to adapt into a traditional home.

The dogs “graduate with a wealth of valuable skills that help give them an increased chance (or a paw’s up!) on finding a loving home.”

Luke is about 7 months old; he came to the shelter initially in the summer when he was just 6 wks old, weighing just 3 lbs. The folks at the Danville-Boyle Co. Humane Society say in his profile, “Luke has done exceptionally well with his training. He is a calm natured dog and tries to please his handler. Luke should make a wonderful family pet!!”

You can learn more about Mutts with Manners on the program website, and learn more about how you can make Luke your forever companion on the DBCHS website.

And you can find more adoptable pets here!
