Welcome to the Heavenly Creatures blog 2011-10-19T18:01:27-04:00 Joanne Brokaw

LOGO Patheos Explore the world's faith through different perspectives on religion and spirituality! Patheos has the views of the prevalent religions and spiritualities of the world.

Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. – Genesis 1:24, 25 NKJV

I’ve never been big fan of the notion that God created the universe and everything in it, then created man and forgot about the rest. Sure, humans are the ones created in the image of God. But don’t forget that whether creation took 7 days or 7 million years, the animals were here before us.

I don’t pretend to speak for God, but there is one thing I’ve learned in my years as a Christian: God is all about relationships.

So I also don’t subscribe to the notion that God created the world and all living things to be at the whim of man to use, abuse, and otherwise waste. While He created the world, and all of the things that creep and fly and swim, and then gave man dominion over them, I believe it was not for man to treat like a vending machine of resources. I think God wanted man to enter into a relationship with His creation.

And when you’re in a relationship with someone, you care about them, you care for them, you look out for their best interests, and you take responsibility for their physical, emotional, and spiritual well being. And they offer you something in return. A relationship is a two way street.

And yes, I believe all dogs go to heaven.

So here we are on the Heavenly Creatures blog, to talk about just those kinds of thing. Every topic is open for discussion, from our pets to animals in captivity, from the ethical treatment of animals we eat to the question of whether animals have souls. Let’s talk about what we’ve learned about life and faith from our animal friends, and what responsibility our faith requires us to have for them in return.

And let’s not forget to talk about how animals make us laugh!

Thanks for joining me as we kick off the relaunch of the Heavenly Creatures blog! I hope you’ll share your thoughts, stories, photos and more. Because, like I said, this is all about relationships, and we’re all in this together!

You can learn more about me by clicking on the “About” tab at the top of the blog, and by visiting my personal blog, Notes From The Funny Farm. I also host the Bark Around Town blog and oversee my dog Bandit’s blog, It’s A Dog’s Life.

Bark to you later!
