My wife and I had been married for exactly eight days and we were excited for the Mad Men season premiere to begin. We turned out the lights in our living room, watched the show, and then went to bed. When we woke up the next morning, we thought it was strange that we hadn’t heard Millie, one of our two cats. Most mornings she calls to us from outside our closed bedroom door, wanting us to wake up and give her some attention. Not only was she not outside the bedroom door, we couldn’t find her or our other cat, Sally, anywhere.

We soon realized that in our enthusiasm to watch Mad Men, we left our sliding door open without the screen, and both cats had wandered out (they’re indoor cats). And then, when we went to bed, we closed the sliding door and locked them out. So they were outside for the first time, and couldn’t get back in.

To make a long story short, that was a very long day, but we were lucky to find both of them by the time we went to bed the next night. And the following day, this picture shows Millie sitting on my desk while I was working. I like this picture because she just looks so happy to be home. And I thought that this is a good lesson: Sometimes it seems like it would be exciting to go explore this crazy world. But in the end, there’s no place like home.
