Aging easily can be a great source of anxiety. Some are worried about staying active with potential health issues, less stamina and the need for assistance. Others are concerned with changing appearances and how their age might affect how friends, family and strangers treat them.
For others, aging means getting closer to death. Research shows that young people are most afraid of the concept of dying, but older people fear the process. The thought of an afterlife can bring comfort, and there are also many Bible verses Christians can turn to when they need assurance that aging gracefully is a good thing.
What does the Bible say about aging? Here are 12 verses that encourage a positive mindset.
1. 2 Corinthians 4:16
“Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.”
A strong belief is that apostle Paul wrote this as part of his letters to the church of Corinth to encourage them during a hard time. Even as your body weakens with age, your spirit is being strengthened for your ascent into heaven.
Throughout the Bible, Christians are encouraged that by believing in Jesus, they will have eternal life, living in heaven after death. As John 3:16 states, “whoever believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.”
2. Isaiah 46:4
“Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you.”
With this verse, God promises his people that he will sustain them even as they grow old. He is always with you as you age and will help you through rough times.
God also mentions he will carry you. He will be there if you grow frail physically, mentally or emotionally.
3. Ephesians 4:15-16
“Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.”
This verse is both a physical and metaphorical reminder to stay strong in the body of Christ. We are to love one another, strive to live as Christ did and keep our physical bodies strong and working properly for as long as possible.
Learning how to stay active in old age has many benefits. You can do more if you’re physically healthy and avoid becoming the one in three men and one in two women who engage in no physical activity by age 75. It can even help your mind stay sharp as you get older.
4. Psalms 73:26
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”
The psalmist in this verse praises God for strengthening and staying with them forever, even when they leave their body.
Your life isn’t done after growing old and passing away. God will guide you through the aging process and welcome you home when your time in this world is over.
5. Philippians 3:20-21
“But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.”
Many Christians believe Paul wrote Philippians from his jail cell in Rome. He wrote it to the people of Philippi with his love and adoration for them. He reminds us all that our homes on Earth aren’t permanent residences. God is preparing a place for you to spend eternity in heaven.
The Bible repeatedly tells us that we will no longer feel pain or suffering when we die. You will be at peace and rejoice in the Lord.
6. Psalm 90:10
“The years of our life are seventy, or even by reason of strength eighty; yet their span is but toil and trouble; they are soon gone, and we fly away.”
This verse from Psalm 90 directly addresses the dying process that many people fear. The psalmist describes dying as “flying away,” a sentiment echoed in the hymn “I’ll Fly Away.”
It acknowledges that life isn’t easy and that we could die at any time, but the end of your body isn’t the end of you. There is another destination.
7. Isaiah 31-32
“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
This verse is also a powerful tool to describe life after death. No matter your physical state when you pass on, you will be able to walk and run again without fatigue. You will soar above the world without fear.
The Lord renews us after we die, and we will feel better than ever in heaven.
8. Psalms 92:12-14
“The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green.”
This psalmist wants to remind readers that the Lord will keep them secure, regardless of age.
As you age, you might think of yourself as a withering plant, but that’s far from the case. You are fresh and worthy of the Lord and will stay that way forever.
9. 1 Timothy 5:1-2
“Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.”
This verse is part of a letter advising Timothy about the church’s issues with Ephesus. It reminds us that every person, including the elderly, is a sacred, worthy creation of God.
Just because you age doesn’t mean others should disrespect you or take you for granted.
10. Deuteronomy 34:7
“Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eye was undimmed, and his vigor unabated.”
This verse is a direct example of how you can thrive into old age. Moses did many great things and died very old. When he did pass away, his sight was sharp and he still had the drive to follow God and live life to the fullest.
It encourages anyone who dreads aging that they could stay in a great mind and body until death.
Aging Gracefully With God
Aging is a part of life that’s unavoidable. We all grow old, and that can lead to some challenges. These verses are excellent reminders that you can age with confidence, knowing what awaits you on the other side.
